WRENCH.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Application filed September'lS, 1913. Serial No. 790,694.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to a wrench which is most readily adaptable for use in connection with pipes, and the primary object of the invention is to-provide a device of this character which is quickly and readily adjustable to any size of object, and which will be most efieetive in use.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a wrench with. a movable jaw capable of adjustment when the same is dis posed in one positionwith respect to the stationary jaw, and a still further object resides in providing a device which is automatically locked in its adjusted position by' the actuation of the wrench.
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter referred to and more particularly'pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure l is an elevation of the device in its normal position showing in dotted lines the position of the movable jaw and shank thereof when the device is applied to use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device, also showing in dotted lines the position of the movable jaw and shank thereon in their effective positions. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section therethrough as seen on line 33 of Fig. 1.
In describing the invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a shank, the inner end of which forms a handle member, and the outer portion of which is enlarged and designed to form a stationary jaw 2. The upper face of this jaw is arranged substantially in a horizontal plane when the device is held in proper position, and said face is provided with inwardly inclined teeth 8.
A U-shaped keeper or swinging member 4 has the sides thereof embracing' the side faces of the outer enlarged ipo-rtion of; the
shank below the jaw 2 andpivotedthereto;on atransverse pivot This keeperv OP-SWlDg ing member projects rearwardlyof the shank ratentedrjeb. alert and receives for sliding movement therein an additional bar or sha'nkb. -Clll1e=outer end of this bar or shank 6 isibentito form:
an acute angle with respect to the shank or bar proper and is designed to form a mom able jaw 7 for cooperation withthe stationary jaw 2. The contacting face, ofn-thejaw 7 is also toothed, as shown..at.;8,;;for .co
of the stationary Shank or bar 6 in the keeper 01:; swinging member 4, anda transverse-pin, .orl stud ;9 in the inner end of said bar or shank; G-is adapted to engage the under edge of said keeper or swinging member at to limit the outward movement of said shank. A. leaf spring 10 secured at its inner end to the rear edge of the shank 1 intermediate the ends thereof, is bent outwardly or rearwardly with respect to the shank l and has the outer end thereof contacting with the front edge of the additional shank or bar 6, forcing the latter outwardly into somewhat binding engagement with the base portion of the U-shaped swinging member 4. This spring. therefore. yieldinglv retains the shank and. movable jaw thereon somewhat in their adjusted positions.
The front edge of the shank or bar 6 is provided with outwardly inclined teeth 11, the purpose of which will presently appear. The enlarged upper portion of the shank l is slotted from its rear edge, as shown at 12, and the'transverse pivot 5 passes through the walls of this slotted portion. Also pivotally carried on this pivot 5 and projecting beyond the rear face of the enlarged upper portion of the shank is a gravity dog 13 which has limited swinging movement and is adapted to engage the teeth 11 on the inner side edge of the bar 6. The teeth 11 will engage said dog 13 upon the disposition inwardly of the inner portion of said bar or shank 6 toward the shank lagainst the tension of the spring 10 and as it is obvious from the inclination of the movable jaw a position for engagement with the gravity dog 10, it will be seen that the locking of the shank and movable jaw in their adjusted positions will be automatic through the actuation of the device.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my impror'ed device, the operation thereof will be readily understood. It will be seen that I have provided a wrench which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very eflicient and useful in operation. 'hile I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in the form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be. resorted to, withinthe scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, is:
A wrench of the class described comprising ashank having an enlarged outer por" tion thereon and provided with a stationary jaw at the outer end of said enlarged portion, a U-shaped keeper having the sides thereof pivoted to the sides of the enlarged portion of the shank and projecting beyond the rear edge of the latter, an additional shank slidably mounted in the projecting portion of said keeper, and ha ing a movable jaw formed on the outer end thereof designed for cooperation with the stationary jaw, the front edge of said shank opposed to the rear edge of the first mentioned shank being also provided with upwardly inclined teeth, a gravity dog pivotally carried on the enlarged portion of the shank and adapted for engagement with the teeth of the second mentioned shank when the 1atter is swung to certain positions with respect to the first mentioned shank, and a leaf spring carried on the first mentioned shank and bent outwardly for engagement with the second mentionedshank at a point below the keeper. 1
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
