To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANNETTA J. COLOM- Bor, citizen of the United States, residing at Madison, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Fasteners, of which the following is a speciication.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for securing ladies hats to the head, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the eficiency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed device including a member adapted to resiliently engage the head of the wearer and with pins movable in opposite directions and carried by said head engaging member and adapted to be projected by the wearer as the hat is placed in position upon the head to engage the hat and firmly hold the same.

Another object ofl the invention is to provide a simply constructed device whereby a hat may be firmly held in position without disturbing the hair or thrusting pins or other devices through or into the hair of the wearer.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device in withdrawn position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view illustrating the position of one of the pins in projected position.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved device comprises a supporting member or plate 10 upon which the hat pins are movably mounted. Connected at 11-12 to the under face of the member 10 are curved head engaging members 13-14, the head engaging members being of resilient material and engaging the head with sutlicient force to prevent displacement when in use. The members 13-14 will be curved to conform to the head of the wearer `and will be changed in form as required. YBy this simple means the improved device is eifectually disposed in position upon the head, and requires no other fastening means than its own resiliency.

Rising from the upper face of the member lOat one side are guide devices 15 spaced apart and through which a rod 16, which constitutes one of the engaging pins of the device, is mounted to slide, and provided at one end with a point 17 and held in withdrawn position by a spring 18. Connected to the plate 10 at the opposite sidek are other guide devices 19 through which a rod 20, which constitutes the other hat engaging pin, is mounted to slide and `with a terminal point 21 at one end and maintained yieldably in withdrawn position by a spring 22.

or like flexible member 23 lis connected to the pin 16, preferably at its inner end, and extends through apertures in the members 15 and thence over the outer face of the curved head engaging member 14 and terminates in a catch 24 adapted to be engaged projected in opposite directions and held in projected position by engaging the catches 2li-27 respectively over the buttons 25-28. By this simple means when a hat is to be secured in position the catchesl 24-27 are released to permit the pins 16-20 to be automatically withdrawn through the action of the springs 155-22. The members 13-14 are then placed over the head of the wearer ico and the hat disposed upon the head and covering the member l0 and its attachments.

When the hat is to be moved it is only necessary to release th'e catches 24-27 from the buttons 25-28 When the pins Will be automatically withdrawn and release the hat. The members 13--14 With their attachments can then be readily removed.

The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufa`ctured and Wholly of metal and increased or l decreased in size to correspond to the hat.

In a device of the class described, a support, pins mounted to move in opposite directions relative to said support, springs operating to hold said pins yieldably in Withdrawn position, means for moving said pins against the resistance of said springs, head engaging means carried by said support, and means for coupling said pin actuating means to said head engaging means.

4. In a device of the class described, a head engaging device, a hat engaging pin movably disposed relatively to said head en gaging device, yieldable means for holding said pin Withdrawn, means for projecting said pin against the resistance of said yieldable holding means, and means carried by said head engaging device for holding said pin projecting means.

5. In a device of the class described, a support, head engaging members connected to said support, guide devices carried by said support, supporting pins mounted to move in opposite directions through said guide devices, springs operating to hold said pins yieldably in Withdrawn position, means for moving said pins through said guides against the resistance of said springs, and means for holding said pin moving means.
