UNDERGARMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SoLoN D. BAUSHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamburg, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in undergarments of that class which are made from a tubular knitted body.
The object in the present instance is to provide a garment of extremely simple construction; one in which the waste is reduced to a minimum; and one in which special provision is made to protect the under arm or arm pit of the wearer.
The invention relates more particularly to the method of making under vests and union suits for ladies wear.
My invention relates to a method of forming an undergarment from a tubular knitted fabric member in the simplest manner possible, that is, by partly severing the upper edge of the member, so that, when the portion cut from the body is raised, it will form a pair of shoulder straps or supports, such as are commonly used on undergarments, and this cutting is done in such manner that the lower edges of the cut, will form a pair of shields or arm pit protectors.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 illustrates a tubular member having two slits cut into it at opposite points, in close proximity to its upper edge. Fig. 2 illustrates the same member with the portions above said slits raised to form the shoulder straps.
The numeral 1 designates a tubular member of knitted fabric, such as is commonly used in the manufacture of undergarments.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 17, 1913.
Patented Feb. 3, 1914..
Serial No. 779,437.
At a point in close proximity to the upper edge of this member, I cut into the body thereof, at two opposite points, indicated by the numeral 2, to a distance approximating one-quarter of the width of the member when lying flat. These slits will partially sever the upper edge of the member, and form a pair of shoulder straps or supports 3, which, when raised, as shown in Fig. 2, will serve to support the garment on the shoulders of the wearer. In thus cutting into the member to form the straps 3, I also form a pair of shields or arm pit protectors 4 just beneath the out, which members 4: will lie against the under arm or arm pit, thus covering and protecting this portion of the body.
It is'evident that in thus forming an undergarment from a tubular fabric member, the waste is reduced very materially, while at the same time, the mode of forming the supporting straps, provides arm openings that will be comfortable and at the same time, does not remove that portion of the member which is required for the necessary protection to the arm pit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The process of making an undergarment from a tubular fabric member, which consists in folding the member flat; cutting two oppositely disposed substantially horizontal slits into the side edges thereof at a point in close proximity to its upper end, and then raising the portions above said slits to form supports.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
