v T. GILSON. JAGK' CONNECTION FOR LOOM S HEDDING MECHANISMS.

THOMAS GILSON, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
JACK CONNECTION FOR LOOM SHEDDING'MECHANISMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 27, 1914.
Application filed February 20, 1913. Serial N 0. 749,563.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, THOMAS GILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jack Connect-ions for Loom Shedding Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in jack connections for loom shedding mechanisms, and the object thereof is to provide means for connecting the jacks and the harnesses, so that should the straps that are connected to the harnesses break, the aforementioned means will be held from contacting with the jacks, thereby preventing injury to or breakage of the parts.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a loom showing the present invention applied thereto, the latter being partly broken away and shown in section. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of Fig. 2, the hook being shown in fragment.
The invention is ordinarily used in connection with the lower notched arm A of the jack, the number of jacks used depending upon the number of harnesses used in the loom.
In accordance with the invention a hollow casing 1 is employed which latter preferably consists of a pair of spaced side plates 2 which are connected at their upper ends by a cross-piece 3. The lower end portions of the side plates 2 are flared and connected at their outer sides by means of a pair of spaced studs 4:. A transverse pin 5 is con nected to the side plates 2 and located at a point above the studs 4 and in the center of the space between said studs. A wire arm or member 6 is formed with a hook 7 on its upper end, which hook embraces the pin 5 so as to have pivotal movement with relation thereto, the pivotal movements of the wire 6 being restricted by engagement with the studs 4:, which latter thereby perform a. dual function, namely, connecting the side plates at their lower ends and limiting the pivotal movements of the wire 6, the latter for a purpose to be described.
The casing 1 is placed on the arm A by inserting the latter in the space between the side plates 2 whereupon the substantially \l-shaped bottom 3 of the cross piece 3 is moved to engage in a selected notch of the arm A. The lower end of the wire arm or member 6 is provided with a hook 8 to which is connected a strap B that connects with the lower portion of the harness of a loom. Should one of the straps B break, the wire cannot fly up, due to the presence of the studs 4, as it frequently does into and among the jacks, causing breakage and injury to the parts.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In combination with the notched arm of the jack and the strap connected to the harness, a casing composed of a pair of spaced side plates, a cross-piece connecting the upper ends of said plates and having a V-shaped lower side for engagement in one of the notches of said arm, the lower end portions of said plates being flared, a pair of spaced studs connecting the lower ends of said plates, a transverse pin connected to said plates and disposed above the studs in the center of the space between the latter, a wire member having a hook engaged with said pin and having its lower end extending down through the space between said studs and having its pivotal movements restricted by the latter, and a hook on the lower end of said wire member for engagement with the strap.
2. In combination with the arm of they jack and the strap connected to the harness, an element supported from said arm, a member having its upper end directly and positively pivoted to the element, means borne by the element .to restrict outward movement of said member relative to said element in case of breakage of the strap, and means to connect the lower end of said member to the strap.
3. In combination with the arm of the jack and the strap connected to the harness, a pair of spaced side members having an element at their top and a pair of spaced elements at their bottoms, the jack arm being received in the space between said members and engaged with said top element, and a connection leading from the strap and directly pivoted to said side members in the space therebetween, said connection having its outward movements limited by engagement with the elements at the bottom of the side members.
4. In combination with the arm of the In testimony whereof I have signed my ack end the strap connected to the harness, name to thisspecification in the presence of a device connected to the ack arm, a memtwo subscribing Witnesses.
her directly and positively pivoted to said THOMAS GILSON. 5 device and connected to the strap and means Witnesses:
to restrict movement of said member relative ADA E. HAGERTY,
to the device should the strap break. J. A. MILLER.
