APPLICATION FILED Jun, 1013.

I ,0 f0 v" I 4@ witmeooeo UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARIA HIGGINS, F LIMESTONE, MAINE.
Application filed January 9, 1913.
To all out it may concern lie it known that I, MARIA HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Limestone, in the county of Aroostook, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven' tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention is directed to improvements in churns, and more particularly to one for whipping cream.
The invention has for its objectto so construct a device of this character which may be easily clamped upon a suitable support and rapidly rotated so as to thoroughly whip the cream or make butter, as desired.
A further object of the invention is to so construct a device of this character that the same may be produced at a minimum cost, and one in which the cover will be positively held in place.
lVith these and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formation, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. at is a bottom plan view. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional View. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line 66 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a frame consisting of a base 2 having rising from the opposite sides thereof spaced standards 3, said base being adapted to be secured to the edge of a table or the like by a suitable clamp 4.
The churn body 5 is formed from glass, of if desired the same may be made from enameled ware. The churn body 5 is in the form of a glass jar and is closed by a top 6, said top being held in place by the bail 7, said bail being secured to the neck of the body by the band of wire 8. Pivotally connected to the band 8 are the links 9 having formed thereon eyes 10, said eyes terminating in the curved lever 11, and as the lower ends of the bail T are pivotally connected in the eyes 10, the lever when pressed downwardly will cause the bail 7 to tightly engage the top 6 to hold the same in place.
A body receiving frame 12 is provided Specification of Letters Patent.
CHURN.
Patented Jan. 27, 1911. Serial No. 741,059.
and consists of a sheet metal band 13 hav- 1ng formed upon its sides at diametrically opposite points trunnions 14, which engage 1n the notches 15 formed in the upper ends of the standards 3, one of said trunnions terminating in a crank handle 16. The frame 12 further consists of a pair of loops 17, the upper ends of which are secured to the lower edge of the band 13, said loops having their bight portions arranged in crosswise relation so that the bottom of the body 5 will rest thereon when the same has been passed through the band 13.
Having their lower ends secured to the band 13 and at points diametrically opposite are arms 18 and 19, the latter being somewhat longer than the former. To the upper end of the arm 18 is connected a clasp 20, a similar clasp being connected to the upper end of the arm 19.
Pivotally connected centrally of the lever 11 is a yoke 22, a similar yoke 23 being connected to the wire band 8.
After the desired amount of cream has been placed in the body 5 the top 6 is placed thereon and held firmly by the bail 7 upon forcing the lever 11 against the breast of the body, whereupon the clasp 20 carried by the short arm 18 engages the yoke 22, and the clasp 21 upon the arm 19 engages the yoke 23 carried by the band 8, thus firmly holding the body in the frame and the top 6 against accidental removal. Thus it will be seen that upon gripping the crank handle 16 and turning the same the frame 12 will be rapidly rotated and thus the body 5.
It is of course obvious that a rubber gasket is placed between the jar neck and cap 6 to insure a liquid tight joint.
lVhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a. frame consisting of a base having a pair of spaced standards mounted thereon, means for clamping the frame to a support, slots formed in the upper ends of the standards, a body receiving frame consisting of a band having trunnions connected thereto and adapted to engage said slots, a pair of loops having their upper ends connected to the band and their bight portions arranged in crosswise relation, a body adapted to be inserted in the band so that its bottom will rest upon the bight portions of said loops, arms secured to the band, a
top for the body, a ring carried by the w the body in said body receiving frame, a
body, a bail pivotally connected to the ring In testimony whereof, I aflix my signaand having a curved lever, yokes carried by ture, in the presence of two Witnesses. the bail and ring said yokes bein en aged by the clamps czfrried by the ,arr s to hold MARIA HIGGINS Vitnesses:
