Speciflcation of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may'concem:

Be it known that I, ALEXANDER M. CLARK,

of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny" and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Liquid-Containers, of which the followingis a s ecification.

n object'of my invention is to provide a new and improved liquid containing packis to provide one 'of the liquid containers with a cover or surface particularly designed for and capable of use as a grainmg tool or device for applying the representation of graining to surfaces, and particularly adapted for imitating quartered oak.

Still further objects of my invention are to provide a simple and efficient package of the character mentioned comprising a plurality of compartments or containers adapted to be assembled and locked together by a bail, which latter is adapted to cooperate with the container having the graining surface; also compartments orcontainers constructed and assembled in such a manner as a to provide, storage chambers between adjacent containers.

In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates an application of my invention, Figure l.is a central vertical sectional view of the liquid containing package constructed in accordance with myv invention; Fig; 2, a plan; Fig. 3, a perspective view of the intermediate container showing the bail .and handle in connection therewith; Fig.- 4., a side view of a comb employed in graining; and Fig. 5, a plan view of a graining member adapted to be used in connection with the handle.

As illustrated and as preferred, the liquid containing package comprises a lower compartment or container 1, an upper compart ment 2, and an intermediate compartment or retainer 3, each comprising abottom member and side walls, and each respectively provided with a cover or cap 4, 5, and 6, thereby forming a separate independent compart ment, each adapted to contain a' different liquid ingredient, such for example, as are used in graining, namely, a ground color, a stam, and a varnish. These compartments or containers differ somewhat in size, and in practice, they are of such. sizes as to contain relative proper proportions of ingredients desired to be used with one another.

1, 2, and 3, when assembled in the position shown by Fig. 1, are designed to" be'lockcd together and carried by. a detachable bail 7 having-a handle 8 secured thereto. As shown, the upper container 2 is provided .with slots 9 into which the bail is entered, and the lower compartment 1 is provided with ear-bosses 10 adapted to receive the respective lower bent ends of the bail. l1 designates two small guide members secured to the upper container 2 and adapted to surround the bail. The central or intermediate container has its outer cylindrical surface formed or provided with a suitable material for graining purposes.- This material preferably covers the outer cylindrical surface of the intermediate container, and as illustrated, the said graining material 'or surface comprises a piece of cloth or aper 12-pasted or otherwise secured to t e container.. Secured to piece 12, I provide projectingstrips or pieces of chamois, felt, sponge rubber, or other suit able material 13 arranged in such a manner as to produce an imitation of quartered oak, as particularly shown by Fig. 3.

.Secured to the bottom and to the cap or cover of the container 3 are ear-bosses 14, and in addition to the ear-boss of the cap or cover 6, this cap is provided with an opening 15 into which i'sinserted a plug 16.

I In use, the graining strip 20 is designed to be applied ,to the handle 8 of the bail and the same employed, when it is desired to produce a different graining effect from the quartered oak imitation produced bythe employment of the intermediate container 3 and its grain} ing surface. v

By means of 'my invention, 1' rovide in a single package a completeon t, including the necessary ingredients and tools, for applying the representation of graining to surfaces. e

What I claim is: i

1. As an article of manufacture, a li uid containing package comprising a plura ity of separable containers with one i of said containers having graining means including projecting pieces of absorbent material and engaging means, and common means for locking the containers in removable position and adapted to engage the engaging means of the graining container when the containers are separated.

2. As an article of manufacture, a liquid containing package comprising a plurality ofseparable superposed containers, with one of said containers having grainmg means including projecting pieces of absorbent material, and common means for securing the containers together.

3. As an article of manufacture, a liquid containing package comprising a plurality of separable superposed containers with one of said containers having graining means on its surface, and common means for locking the containers in removable position and cooperating with the graining container when the containers are separated.
