WILLIAM` W. wtees, oF GRAB ORCHARD. ILLINOIS, AssrGNoR or ONEJIALF To WLAYMAN L. WELBonN, or GRAB ORCHARD, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-SHADE.
specificationvof Letters Patent.
Patent ed Jan. 2, 'l 91.4.
a citizen of the United States. residing' at s Crab Orchard. in the count-y ot Williamson and State et' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vtuidow- Shades, oi which the following is a speeiiif cation, reference being had to the aecompanvng drawings.
T is invention relates to window rhalles and has for an object to provide novel manA nallyoperated means which ma \r he eas-il)v and conveniently manipulated to canse the spring roller to wind up the shade.
A turther object is to provide an eifel-tive. neat and inconspicuous support t'or the spring roller and its controlling means.
A still further object is to provide a novel controlling lever and guard for the lever. the guard preventing the operator-s fingersV from contacting with and soiling the Aliado `With the above objects in view the invention consists ot' certain novel details ot' construction and combination ot parts hereinafter fully described and claimeihit being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor detaile ot' construe tion within the scope ot the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawingsl illustrating this invention :---l"igure l is a trout elevation showing the invention applied to a window. Eig. 2 is a plau view showing the spring roller and its supporting means` with parts removed. Fig'. IS is a trout elevation otz the spring roller and its supportinar means with parts lu'ol-:en away. Ifigr. lis a cross sectional view on the line Limi Eig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the guard.
Referring* now to the drawings in which like charactersI of reference desig late simi lar part-s, 9 designates a window easing and l0 and 1l designate the upper and lower sashcs respectively of the window.
The device comprising` the subject-matter of this invention consists offa spring roller l2 which is jourualed in angleiron brackets 13 and 14 that are secured to the ends of a support in the nature ot a Slat '15. 'lhe journal 16 at one end of the roller is rev olubly fitted in an opening l? in the related angleiron bracket 13. 'lhe journal 1S at the opposite end of the. roller is terminally flattened as shown at I9 and is fitted in av slot 2() formed .in the related angleiron bracket 14. The journal 18 is thus locked against turning and serves to wind up and hold one end of the helical controlling .spring '2l of the roller. in the usual manner, $3
when the shade 22 carried bv the roller is pulled out.
.\v Cap 23 is fitted on one end of the roller and is provided with an opening 24 which revoluhly receives the journal 18. The cap is formed on the peripheral edge ot' its end l'aee with a circular series of axially extending teeth Q5, the purpose of which will presently appear.
For actuating the link a lever 3l is monnted in a recess 32 formed in the slat 15, 8e the lever having an eye 33 intermediate its ends which interlocks with a hook 34 that is formed on the adjacent inner end of the link 26. The lever is equipped at the innere end with a coil spring 35 which is terminally 85v connected to a stationary pin 36 disposed in the recess. this spring! serving to hold the lever pressed against-the adjacent wall of the recessl in normal position, in which position ot' the lever the catch 2S is engaged 90 with the teeth 25.
A finger rest 37 is iixed at the inner end in a recess 32. both the finger rest aud the lever 3l extending forwardly beyond the, front longitudinal edge of the Slat and being curved in opposite directions. The finger rest forms an abutment against which the operators torelinger may be placed while the operators thumb is placed against the lever to exert pressure on the latter and move the latter toward the finger rest, during which movement of the lever the catch 28 is moved outwardly from engagement with the teeth 25. l
A cover plate 38 i: disposed on the slat 105 and forms a housing over the recessl 32, the plate havingat its forward edge an outwardly curved lip 39 which conforms to the contour 'of the spring roller and performs the function of a. guard against which the backs of the fingers of the operators hand may bear while the lever is being manipulated, whereby soiling of the shade is prevented.
f The shade is provided with eyes d() which may be engaged with hooks Lll or the like disposed at or 'near the top of the window casing es shown in Fig. l.
In operation, to draw down the shade the lever 3l is pushed toward the finger-rest 3T and there held to release the catch 2S from the teeth Q5, whereupon the curtain may be S then pulled down to the desired extent. T he lever is then released with a resultant engagement. of the catch with the teeth whereby the spring roller is held against rewinding the shade. To raise the shade the lever is pushed and held toward the finger rest with a resultant disengagement ot the catch from the teeth whereupon the spring roller is treed and is urged by its controlling spring to immediately wind the shade.
From the above description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simpre and inexpensive device of the class described, wherein the manually controlled lever for operating the spring roller may be easily and conveniently manipulated, and furthermore that the device is neat and inconspicuous when applied, and still further that soiling ot' the shade by contact with the operators hand is positively prevented.
lll/hat claimed, is :H
l. il device ot the character described including a support, brackets carried by the Los/mei support, a roller journaled in the brackets, such roller being provided with a series of notches in one of its ends, and an endwise movable member carried by the support and terminating in an angular portion adapted to be received in the notches of the roller whereby such roller may be held against rotation, the extremity of the angular portion of the endwise movable member being projected through one of the brackets whereby such member maintained in operative relation. I
2, A device ot the character described including a support provided with -a transverse recess and an elongated recess in communication with the transverse recess, brackets on the support, a roller journaled in the brackets, such roller having notches in one ot' its ends, an endvvise movable member extending within the longitudinally directed recess and terminating in an angular portion adapted to be engaged with the notches of the roller, the extremities ot such angular portion being directed through ther adjacent bracket to maintain such member in operative position, and means for im! parting endwise movement to the member mounted within the transverse recess ot the support.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. WILLIAM lV. VVIGGS.
