SEBASTIAN G. HAVERSTIGK, OF FROSTBURG, MARYLAND.
CURTAIN-SHADE RAISER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,260, dated April 30, 1901.
Application filed August 2, 1900. Serial No. 25,701. (No model.)
STICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frostburg, in the county of Allegany and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Curtain-Shade Raiser, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a curtain-fixture, and more particularly to means for raising the same; and the object in view is to provide a simple and effective attachment for a curtain whereby it may be automatically raised without pulling on the curtain itself and capable of being applied to the end of an ordinary curtain-pole without requiring a particular construction of the same and which will not easily get out of order, as the parts are strong and durable and comprise a comparatively small number of elements.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a window-frame, showing theimproved device applied thereto in operative position in connection with a curtain and pole, which are broken away. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the improved device, showing the casing broken away to expose the interior mechanism. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the improved device, showing a portion of the curtain-pole in con nection therewith in elevation.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 1 designates a curtain-pole of solid construction from end to end, to which is fastened a curtain 2 of any suitable character, and to one end of the pole a cap-disk 3 is secured and has an outwardly-projecting centrally-located squared or angular stub 4 to form the means of coupling the improved device to the pole. The improved fixture comprises an outwardly-projecting inclosing casing 5, having rear securing ears or angular extensions 6, and within the said casing a drum 7 is rotatably mounted and has a center journal 8at the inner side, provided with an angular socket to receive the stub 4, as
side of the casing for convenient engage-- ment with a key. Surrounding the drum is a fiat spring 11, havingone end secured to the drum and the other end attached to the top portion of the inner side of the casing, and in the preliminary arrangement of the improved device this spring is wound by rotating the drum through the medium of the said winding-post. Fulcrumedto the outer side of the casing in advance or in front of the plane of the axis of the drum, as at 12 is an operating-lever 12, provided with a tooth 13 in rear of its fulcrum and with tooth-spaces 14 in front and rear of the said tooth to accommodate engagement with the said ratchetwheel, as shown by Fig. 2. The tooth 13 is held in continual normal engagement with the ratchet-wheelto prevent accidental winding of the spring 11 bya U-shaped pressurespring 15, having one end secured to an adjacent portion of the side of the casing and the opposite free end bearing on the upper edge of the lever .at a point in rear of the ratchet-wheel and seated in a recess 16. The lever projects inwardly from the casing a considerable distance and has a pull-cord or analogous device 17 attached thereto and depending within convenient reaching distance.
It will be observed that the direction of the teeth of the ratchet issuch that the curtain 'may be pulled down at will, and when the 13 from the ratchet-wheel and permit the resulting from pulling the same in the ordinary construction and arrangement. of curtain-fixtures is entirely avoided, and though the preferred form of the improved device has been shown and descriptively disclosed it is obviously apparent that changes in the form, size, proportions, and minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principle of the invention.
is claimed as new is In a curtain attachment of the class set forth, an outwardly-projecting casing, adru m rotatably mounted in said casing and comprising in integral construction a drum proper having an inner center journal 8 bearing in the inner end of the casing and formed with an angular socket to receive the stub of the curtain-pole, areduced extension on the outer proper having its ends respectively secured to the drum and easing, an operating-lever fulcrumed on the outer end portion of the casing in advance of the plane of the vertical axis of the drum proper and provided with a single tooth in its lower edge located at an intermediate point to engage said ratchetteeth, the said lever being straight and projecting through the front portion of the eas- Having thus described the invention, what 7 ing, a U -shaped pressure-spring engaging the top portion of the lever in rear of the drum and single tooth of the latter, and a pull-cord attached to the front end of the lever, whereby a downward pull on said cord will elevate the rear of the lever disengaging the single tooth thereof from the said ratchet-teeth of the drum against the resistance of'said spring.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as uiy own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
SEBASTIAN G. HAVERSTICK.
