SHADE-ROLL-OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 26, 1912.
lo all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. Srncnam, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Potlatch, 4in the county of Latah and Stato ot' Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shade-Roll-(`)perating Devices, of which .the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in shade-roll operating devices, the primary object of the invention being to provide a generally improved springless shade-roll operating device, the invention being particularly adapted for use in connection with large shades and rolls, awning rolls, curtain rolls, and the like.
A further object o't` the invention is to place all the shade roll actuating or operating mechanism at one end thereof and entirely independent of the shade-roll, proper, and provide simple, cheap and efficient operating mechanism without the use ot springs, the invention being particularly adapted for use in connection with heavy rolls and shades as above pointed ont.
With the above mentioned and other ends in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement. and combination of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in one of its embodiments in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out Vin the appended claims. Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1, is a t'ront elevation of a mounted shade-roll equipped with my improved operating device. lfig. 2, a side elevation of thc same. Fig. 3, an enlarged frontl view of the bearing bracket housing detached. Fig. 4l, a similar view ot' the same with t-he cap or cover of the twopart bearing' bracket removed, showing the arrangement of the internal operating mechanism. Fig. 5, an end view ot' the same. Fig. 6, a cross sectional view taken on line 6-6 ot' F ig. 4. Fig. 7 a perspective view of the improved shade-roll pintle shaft detached.
Similar numerals ot' reference designate like parts throughout all the figures of the drawings.
The improved shade-roll operating device comprises a pint'le shaft 1, provided witlra winged head l, adapted to be mounted m .the end of an ordinary wooden shade-roll 2.
The'opposite end'of the shade roll may be mounted in any suitable and convenlent Patented Feb. 18, 1913. Serial No. 673,651.
manner and the shade 3, may be mounted upon and secured to the roll :2, in the usual manner, and is preferably` weighted at its lower end b y means of a rod or bar 4.
As a convenient means fornlounting the bearing or pintle shaft l, a two-part bearing bracket or housing is provided, said bearing bracket or housing4 comprising a base or bracket member 5, having wings 5, provided .with screw openings 'for securing the same to a window t'rame. as indicated in Figs. l and .2 ot' the drawings. The base member 5, is provided at its ends with bearing members t'or the reception of the pintle shaft l` and as a means for removably mounting said shaft 1, in the bearing bracket housing as well as covering the op erating mechanism hereinafter described, a 'ap or cover member t'. is provided, said cap or cover member being provided with companion bearing members (3, and as a means t'or securing the cap or cover in position, the same is provided with lugs (3b, provided with openings adapted to register with similarly shaped or companion lugs 56, on the base member and secured b v means ot' securing boltsand nuts 7.
As a means t'or operating the shaft l. and roll in a direction ladapted to elevate or roll up the shade 3, an operating strap S, is provided, said strap being adapted to be wound upon the shaft 1, in an opposite direction to that of thc shade il, on the roll 2, so that when the strap S. is pulled down through the medium o'f thc handle 8, the shade 2l, will be wound up uponthe roll Q. and when the shade 3. is pulled down strap 8. will be wound up upon the sha it' and inside of the two-part bearing bracket housing or casing, the cap or cover member 6, being provided with a slot openin(T t), at its lower sido for the passage of the strap 8. The lower end of the strap 8,'is preferably provided with a weight 10, to counter or over balance the weight of the shade 3,'
and nod or bar 4, in the various position.l to which the shade may be adjusted, and as a means for holding the roll in any position to which it may be adjusted and. preventing its paying out of the weighted strap 8, a ratchet wheel l1, is mounted on the shaft 1, and, in the present instance, as an integral part of the actuating spool or drum hereinafter described, the teeth of said ratchet Wheel extending in a direction opposite to the `direction of rotation of shaft 1, and roll los 2, in the paying out or lowering of the Shade 3, said ratchet teeth being adapted to be normally engaged by means ofa pivoted paWl member 12, mounted, in the/presentV instance, Withinone end of the base bracket lmember 5, and provided with a countervrWeight member 12a, adapted to normally "attaching the 'operating 'strap 8, tothe pintle shaft 1, Within the two-part bearing 'bracket housing, said pintleshaft, in the present instance, is provided with an actuating spool or drum 14, detachably mounted upon the pintle shaft 1, by means of a cross pin 15 (see Fig. 4,) saidpinextendingY through Vvsuitable'op'e'niigs in the spool or /dru'mil't and through an opening 1b (see Fig. 7 in the pintle shaft 1.
When itI is desired to roll'up or elevate the shade 3, the pawl 12, is released from engagement of the ratchet Wheel 11 through the medium of thepawl release cord 13, with one hand and if the weight. 10 in the strap 8 is not sutiicient to elevate t-he shade to the position desired, the operating strap 8, may oe pulled down with the other hand. When it-is desiredl to pull the shade down, the latter may be pulled down in the usual manner thus causing the operating' strap S, to be wound on the spool or drum 14. the pawl member 12, riding upon tht` ratchet teeth of the wheel 11 until` the desired position is reached.
F rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described an embodiment of my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
, 1. A shade-roll operating device, compris` ing a pintle srl'raft provided with a Winged head,;a"spool removably mounted thereon provided With a slot, a Weight'e'drpawl in said housing-normally engaging said ratchetVV teeth, a strap on said spool extending through said slot, and a pendant cord connected to said pawl and adapted to release the latter from said ratchetteeth.
2. A shade-roller operating device, comprising a shade-roll provided with a bearing shaft at one end, a bearing bracket for said shaft, a ratchet wheel carried by said shaft, a Weighted shade mounted on said shaderoll, a counterbalanced pa-Wl normally en* gaging said ratchet Wheel and adapted to prevent the unro-lling of said shade-roll, an operating strap Wound uponsaid shaft in an Voppositedirection..tmthatV of said shade, and a paWl releasing cord depending from said paWl and adapted to release the latter from said ratchet Wheel when said operating strap is pulled down to actuate said shaderoll and roll said shade on the latter.
3. A shaderoll operating device, comprising a bearing bracket housing consisting of a base member and a removable bearing cap or cover, a `shade-roll pintle shaft mounted in said bearing bracket housing, a Winding spool carried by said pintle shaft Within said housing, a ratchet wheel on said pintle shaft, a counterbalanced paivl Within said housing normally engaging with said ratchet wheel, an operating strap wound on. said spool in the direction opposite the direction of theteetl1 of said ratchet Wheel, and a paivl release cord carried by said paWl and adapted to release the latter When said operating strap is pulled to actuate said spool and pintle shaft in a lshade rolling direction.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES L. SINCLAIR. VVitnesses ARTHUR L. HICKOX, ADOLPH E. YAEGER.
