Dec. 17, 1940. C M L 2225280 SHADE FIXTURE Filed Aug. '5, 1938 ATTORNEYS Patented Dec. 17, 1940 P cs 1 2,225,280 SHADE FIXTURE Aaron 0. Sample, Seattle, Wash.
Application August 5, 1938, Serial No. 223,358
1 Claim.
The invention relates to a shade fixture and more especially to a window shade raising device.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein a 5 window shade hung upon a window can be conveniently raised and held in an adjusted raised position, the device being hung from the head of the window frame and is located above the shade, centered with respect thereto and connected so 10 that the shade may be unwound from its roller and held in an adjusted position.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fixture of this character, which is simple in its construction, thoroughly reliable and effective 5 in operation, possessing few parts, being strong, durable, easy of operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction,
combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of a window showing a shade hung thereon with the fixture constructed in accordance with the invention in association therewith.
' Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of. Figure 3 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 4 looking in the direction of the arrows.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generally a portion of a window frame being of conventional make-up, and B, a window shade, which is carried upon a roller l0 and is 50 adapted to be wound on or unwound from such roller in the adjustment thereof, the roller being of spring winding type and is journaled in shade roller brackets ll, these being fastened to opposite sides of the vertical portions of the window 55 frame. It is preferable to have these brackets H support the shade roller l0 approximately midway of the length or height of the window frame A for shading the upper half of such window in the use of the shade.
The fixture constituting the present invention 5 for effecting the adjustment of the shade B comprises a relatively narrow housing [2 forming spaced perpendicular parallel side cheeks It. This housing I2 is partially closed at its back l4 and bottom l5, respectively, while the front and a portion of the top of the housing is opened and formed with the top area of said housing [2 and projected laterally from the side cheeks I 3 thereof are attaching flanges It for accommodating fasteners I! so that the housing can be made secure to the head I8 of the window frame, being preferable to have the housing located at the longitudinal center of said window frame.
Formed in the cheeks iii of the housing l2 and opening through the free front edges thereof are diagonal slots [9, these being inclined inwardly in the direction of the vertical plane of the window frame A and extend approximately centrally with respect to said housing l2. Removably ac-- commodated within the slots I9 is an axle 20 having a squared terminal 2| which fits one of the slots l9 snugly so that the axle, when engaged in the housing, will be held against rotation; This axle 20 rotatably supports a sprocket pulley 22 over which is trained a link chain 23, its links being engageable by the sprocket teeth of said pulley 22 so that the latter will be positively driven on pulling upon the chain which at one end has connection with the reinforced end 24 of the shade B through the medium of a link 25 loosely engaged in said end and with theend adjacent thereto of the chain. This chain at the other end in this instance has connected therewith a pull string 26, although the same may be dispensed with.
The pulley 22 has formed therewith a disk 21 provided with an annular peripheral flange 28 eifecting a recess 29 in this disk and pivoted at 30 to the disk 28 within the recess 29 isa gravity ratchet acting dog 3i adapted to engage in a notch 32 provided in an annular shoulder 33 on the axle 20 for the latching of the pulley 22 on the said axle 20 at determined intervals of rotation of such pulley on making adjustment of the shade B so that it will be held in an adjusted postion with relation to the window frame A. The disk 2'! of the frame 28 creating the recess 29 effects a boxing for the dog or. pawl 3| and the annular shoulder 33 on the axle 2B. The pulley is susceptible of free rotation on the axle 20 in one direction and is latched through gravity action of the pawl or dog 3| when rotated in the reverse direction so that the shade can be latched in an adjusted position on unwinding thereof from the roller I0.
The chain 23 has its attachment with the shade at a point vertically aligned with the mounting of the housing l2 on the window frame.
What is claimed is: v
A shade fixture comprising an upright frame constituting a housing having spaced side walls provided with slots inclined inwardly of the housing and opening upwardly through the said side walls, a center pin passing through the slots and a a provided with an angular end contacting with the edges adjacent thereto of one of the slots to hold the pin against rotation, a sprocket rotatably mounted upon the center pin, a gravity actuated dog pivoted to the sprocket, a notched disc fixed to the pin and having the dog engageable with the notch in said disc, and a sprocket chain engaged over the sprocket, said sprocket having an elongated recessed wall accommodating the notched disc and dog and maintaining the chain against riding on? the sprocket, being guided between said wall and a side wall or the frame which are arranged at opposite sides of the sprocket.
