lliniirien @mairies lPatented llDecember 13, lt'll..
./-ifrlenrr llllririciei SPECIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent No.
Application filed September 8, 1908.
To (all 'wl/,0711, t 'nt/ty colt/:07%.-
Be it known that l, AeNns H. Rioniiniillnn, a citizen of the United States, residing' at St. Louis, in the State oi' Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord Attachments For VVindow-Shades, oitl which the following' is a specification, reference being' had therein to the accompanyi ng' drawin This invention relates to improvements in a cord attachment for window-shades; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object ot this invention is to construct a device to be attached to the stil'iening'bar ot' the window-shade, the said device containing' the regulating-cord.
A 'further object is the cord is normally concealed from view by being' retained within a casing' by a spring-drum, yet permitting the cord to be partially withd 'awn for the adjustment oi' the shade.
Figure l is a perspective view ot' a windowshade, showing' the improved device in position, the cord partially withdrawn. Fig'. Q is a vertical sectional view taken through the casing', showing' its internal construction. Fig'.
3 is a vertical cross-sectional view ol the saine,
showing' its construction and relative to the shade.
lin the construction ot' the device as shown, l indicates a casing' provided with a verticali projecting' flange 5, located at one side -thereof, and provided with suitable screw-holes through which screws, brads, or the like may be inserted for attaching' said device to the The easing' il has also a housing' 7, in which is located a revolving' spring' actuated drum 8, loosely mounted upon a stationary .shal't 9, the said shaft being' supported in the casing' 4. A i'lang'e l0 is formed on one side ol'l the drum 8 and provided with notches ll, in which is adapted to eng'ag'e the pawl l2, which is pivotally connected to the side wall of the casing'li. (See Fig'. 2.) To the outer circumference ol" the drum proper is secured one end of the cord 13, and around said drum the said cord is wound.
The cord is prevented trom leaving' the position 777,140, dated December 13, 1964. Serial No. 172,214. (No model.)
drum by means of the llang'ed edge 14. A hole 15 is termed in the bottom ot' the casing' 4, through which the opposite end ot' said cord is passed and attached to a knob lli, by which the operator may partly withdraw said cord when desiring' to adjust the position oi'l the shade.
A spiral spring' 17 is located within the drum 8, one end thereol." rig'idly secured to the inner periphery and theother end rigidly secured to the shaft 9.
lily pulling' upon the cord i3 the drum will revolve within the casing', at the same instant winding' up the spiral spring' until its movement is limited. The shade is then adjusted, and by instantly releasing' said cord the same will be rewound upon the drum bythe unwinding' o'lj the spiral spring' until the knob comes in contact with the casing', completely concealing' the cord 'from view.
lf desired to have the cord or a portion thereof to project trom the casing', it is allowed to slowly rewind until the pawl l2 eng'ag'es the notch ll in the liang'e.
lhe device is made ornamental and dispenses with the inconvenience of the common cord and marring` ol the woodwork. lt has features of novelty and utility.
Alila-ving' tully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device ol the class described comprising' a casing',a llang'e projecti ng' up wardly from said casing', said device attached to the stillening'bar ol'l the window-shaifle, a drum, a shaft for supporting' the drum within the casing', flanges .formed on each side olf the drinn, a cord secured to the drum and adapted to wind around the same between the flanges, a spiral spring' located inthe drum for controlling' said drum when manipulated by the action oit' the cord substantially as specified.
2. A wirulow-shade provided with means for :uljustably securing-its cord thereto, said means comprising' a casing' having' devices by which it is secured tothe stillei'ling'bzn' of said shade, and a housing' having` an opening' at one end only through which the cord is adapted to he drawn, a drum rotatably mounted in said housing and to which one end of said cord is IOO housing and to which one end of said cord is secured, and a spring connected with said drum and serving to rotate the saine in one direction so as to draw the cord into the housingl when the cord is released.
ln testimony whereof l aHiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
