WILLIAM F. BODE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR TO REID MURDOCH 8c 00., OF
' CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
EXHIBIT OR DISPLAY RECEPTACLE.
osaess.
Application filed October 21, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. Bonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibit or Display Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in exhibit or display receptacles and more particularly to receptacles for containing materials to be sold in small quantities, the materials in the receptacle being visible through the transparent closure and all parts being neat appearing and sanitary, said receptacle being of a shape adapting it for easy support in a circular perforation, as in the open top of a containing barrel, so closing the perforation to prevent contamination of the contents of the barrel by dust, dirt, flies, etc.
One of the objects of my invention to this end is to provide such a receptacle with a rim or flange which shall extend over the chime of a containing barrel for effectively supporting the receptacle and closing the barrel.
Another object is to provide such a structure otherwise advantageous for such use.
In the drawings, wherein I have shown an embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device in place upon a material-containing barrel; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with parts broken away.
Some materials, such as pickles in liquid, when exhibited in the usual containing receptacles are not attractive and do not appear to be in a sanitary condition, both on acount of the nature of the usual containers and on account of the material itself when held in relatively large containers. Thus in the case of pickles, the usual barrel is disadvantageous for purposes of exhibition to retail customers and the relatively large quantities of liquid contained in them become covered with an unsightly film. It is to obviate these disadvantages and to provide a more convenient dispensing vessel that my invention is intended.
In the drawings, I have shown a receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention and have shown it applied to a barrel such as those in which pickles are customarily contained.
lhe body member of the receptacle, indicated at 5, is preferably of such material as convenience I have shown the body 5 as comprising a cylindrical portion 6 from which an integral tapering portion 7 extends to the bottom 8, thus providing a structure for coaction with the usual circular barrel. At the juncture of said cylindrical and tapering portions, an annular outwardly extending flange 9 is provided upon the exterior of the body 5, said flange or bead being of such thickness and depth as suitably to support the receptacle, and its contents.
Upon the side of the member 5, extending from and integral with the cylindrical portion 6 thereof, I preferably provide a hinge member or lug 10, perforated as at 11 to receive a closure-supporting means to be described. The upper edge 12 of the body 5 is adapted to coact with a flat surfaced overlying cover such as a plate of glass.
While any cover may be used with the member 5, I prefer to use a plate of glass 13 of hexagonal shape and large enough to span the edges 12 of the body member 5. The engagement between the plate glass cover and the edge 12 of the member 5 sufliciently closes the interior of the receptacle from the atmosphere, dust, etc.
14 indicates a wire bent to engage the cover 12 at its front and rear and twisted between such points of engagement as at 15, to provide a handle whereby the cover may be lifted. At the rear of the cover the wire is bent downwardly, as at 16, and curled around to form a hinge member for insertion of a cotter pin, or pintle, indicated at 19, which lies in the perforation of the lug 10. From the pin-engaging spiral 17 the wire extends outwardly as at 19 and at its end is bent around as at 20 for engagement with the other end of the pin. It will be apparent that the cover is thus mounted for hinging support upon the integral lug 10 of the body member 5, and further that the relation of the parts is such that the loop portion 1920 affords a stop to limit the backward movement of and hold in open position the cover 13 by coaction of said loop against the side of the receptacle.
The contents may be displayed in and sold from the exhibit receptacle without necessity of opening the containing barrel when the material is to be supplied in small quantities to the customer.
WVhile I have described an embodiment of my invention, and shown its advantage as applied to material-containing barrels, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes may be made in the non-essential details thereof, as .by making the structure hexagonal or other shape instead of cylindrical, that it may be variously applied, as to tables or counters having therein a series of perforations to receive the rims or flanges, and also that the cover may be of different construction with or without the hinge, without departing from the spirit of the invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. An article of manufacture comprising a hollow body member, having an upper cylindrical portion and a lower taperingportion, the upper edge of said cylindrical portion adapted to coact with a closure, and i the bottom of said tapering portion being- Copies of this patent may be obtained for closed, an integral annular receptacle-supporting flange located at the juncture of said cylindrical and tapering portions, a closure for coaction with said upper edge nf the cylindrical portion, a perforated integral lug extending from said cylindrical portion, and means provided with a hinge member in engagement with said lug.
2. An article of manufacture comprising a hollow member, having an upper cylindrical portion and a lower tapering portion, the upper edge of said cylindrical portion adapted to co-act with a closure and the bottom of said tapering portion to be closed, an integral annular receptacle-supporting flange located at the juncture of said cylindrical and tapering portions, a transparent closure for co-action with the upper edgeof the cylindrical portion, a perforated integral lug extending from said cylindrical portion and a cover supporting means provided with a hinge member in engagement -with said lug and detachably engaging said closure.
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
