To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARIE O. IRWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new, and useful Improvements in Bedclothes-Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to bed clothes holders, and has for its principal object to pro vide a device for holding bed clothes in place and holding the clothes or a mattress securely to the bed frame. In accomplishing this obj ect I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a perspective view of part of an ordinary bedstead, illustrating the use of my bed clothes holder. Fig. II is an enlarged detail perspective of the holder. Fig. III is a vertical section of same, illustrating the locking connection of the slide with its bracket.

Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a bedstead which may be of any ordinary construction, having the usual end rails 2.

3 designates a mattress which overlies the springs (not shown) in the ordinary manher, and 4: the bed clothes, part of which have been turned back to illustrate the application of the holder to the mattress.

The holder comprises a bracket 5 having an upturned, inner lip 6 forming a pocket which is adapted for receiving the edge of the end rail 2 and having a threaded aperture 7 carrying a thumb screw 8, by means of which the bracket may be rigidly secured to the end rail. The body member of the bracket has an outwardly facing flange 9 adapted for overlying the upper edge of the end rail 2 when the parts are in place to support the bracket and holder positively from the rail, the back lip 7 being extended to only about the center of the bracket in order to leave an opening 10 through which the rail 2 may be seated in the bracket.

Fixed on the bracket 5 is a head 11, preferably comprising a U-shaped piece of sheet metal, the lower member of which has grooves 12 in its outer edge and the upper member of which has apertures 13 in aline ment wit-h the grooves 12 in the lower member. Slidably projected through the apertures 13 and grooves 12 are legs 14 of a slide 15, having an arm 16 projecting laterally therefrom and adapted to overlie a mattress or bed clothes, and having an outwardly upturned hook 17 at its lower end by which it is anchoredto the bracket. The legs 14 have notches 18 adapted for engagement with the under edge of the lower member of the U-shaped head 11, so that the slide is held by the head when in use.

In using the device, the bracket is applied to the end rail by hooking the same over the lower edge of the rail and arranging the flange 9 over the upper edge thereof and tightening the thumb screw against the inner rail face. The slide is then lowered in the head until the arm 16 presses against the mattress, or bed clothes, and clamps same tightly against the springs. When the clamp is released the upward and outward pressure of the mattress, or bed clothes,

against the arm will tend to pivot the clamp 1 to bring the notched legs into locking engagement with the head 11, so that the notched part is engaged by a lower member of the head and the entire clamp held against upward movement under tension from the mattress, or bed clothes. It is apparent that the clamp will be held in this position but that when it is to be removed it is only necessary to move the upper portion thereof inwardly sufliciently to disconnect the notched parts of the legs from the clamp head when the legs will rise through the head grooves and apertures to free the mattress, or bed clothes, the hook end 17 preventing the escape of the slide from the clamp head.

Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new therein and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is

1.'In a bed clothes holder, an attaching bracket, comprising a head having projecting portions of different widths, and provided with apertures and grooves respectively, and a slide having legs projected through said apertures, and adapted for setting in said grooves.

2. A bed clothes holder comprising a bracket adapted for attachment to a bed frame, a U-shaped head connected with the bracket, one of the members of said head being provided with apertures and the other member being of less width than the first named member and having grooves in alinement with said apertures, and a slide having legs projected through the apertures in one of the head members and having notched portions adapted for locking engagement with the grooved member of said head.

A bed clothes holder comprising a bracket having a hooked part adapted for application to a bed frame and having a keeper flange, a U-shaped head fixed on said bracket, one of the members of said head being provided with apertures and the other member with grooves, a slide having legs adapted for travel in said apertures and having notches adapted for locking engagement with the grooved part of the second member, said slide having a clamp arm at its upper end, and a hook on its lower ends, for the purpose set forth.

In a bed clothes holder, a bracket comprising a body member having a spaced lip at one end, and a laterally directed flange at the other end spaced from the end of said lip to form a mouth, means on the bracket for locking same to a bed frame, a head on said bracket, and a slide carried by and adapted for locking engagement with said hea In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
