The present invention aims more specifically to provide, in a mortise look, a stop work mechanism including plungers exposed through the face of the case, one of the plungers being so constructed and operated that it may be deadlocked in either position.
It is another object of the present invention to provide means whereby the deadlocking mechanism for the stop work mechanism is controllableby means of a suitable key only.
To the above and other ends, the present invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference charactors have been employed to denote corresponding parts and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mortise lock embodying the present invention, the near side of the case being removed. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental detail in side elevation, showing the several parts of the stop work mechanism in deadlocked position, so as to deadlock the outer knob. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the stop work mechanism in its other deadlocked position, permitting the free movement of the outer knob. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the plunger of the stop work mechanism which forms the heart of the present invention. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the said plunger, taken from the rear. Referring specifically to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates the case of the mortise lock including the face 11, a spring pressed latch bolt 12 being housed within the ease and passing slidably through the face and being normally projected by the spring, so as to be retracted by means of the actuating lever 13. This actuating lever is controlled by a pair of roller backs or fol lowers 14 and 14. The follower 1 1 is actuated by the outer knob of the lock (not shown), while the follower 14' is actuated by the inner knob (not shown), as is customary. The follower 14 is provided with the usual notch or recess 15, with which the inner end of the plunger 16 is engageable for purpose of deadlocking or dogging the follower 14 and the outer knob. The plunger 16 passes slidably through the face 11 so as to be exposed for manipulation by the thumb or fingers, and a complementing plunger, indicated generally by the numeral 16, passes slidably through the face of the case, and is made to reciprocate in a direc tion reverse to that of the plunger 16, by means of a rocking lever 17 fulcrumed within the case, as is common. A leaf spring 18 also cooperates with the plunger 16 to hold it in either dogging position or free position.
The foregoing parts are common in mortise locks and need not be described at length, their construction and operation being old in the art, it being noted that when the plunger 16 is pressed inwardly by the outer knob to be free to retract the latch bolt through the medium of the actuating lever 13.
The present invention consists in the particular construction of the idle plunger, designated generally by the numeral 16, which permits same to be deadlocked at either position, so as to deadlock the stop 'work mechanism of which it is a part.
In carrying out the present invention the plunger 16 is constructed of two main parts, which jointly are approximately of the formv of the usual plunger so as to pass slidab-ly through the face of the case to be exposed for manipulation by the thumb of the operator. One part of the said plunger is in the form of a cylindrical body 20 having the extension 21 at its inner end provided at one side with a lug 22 for engagement with the rocking lever 17 and provided at its other side with a lug 23 adapted to slide against the side of the case. The other part of the plunger is in the form of a cap fitting over the outer end of the body 20, the head or end 24 of the cap being comparatively thick, and the annular portion or flange 25' thereof forming a sleeve fitting completely over the body 20. Thus, the cap or exterior member of the plunger 16 may slide through the face of the case with the same facility as the ordinary plunger.
The cap is constrained from sliding longitudinally on the body 20 and is permitted to have a limited rotary motion thereon by i n .kerf 35 extending diametr cally thereof and being of a depth to extend to the bottom of means of a slot 26 provided in the sleeve 25 and extending approximately through an arc of 180, a stop, screw or the like 27 being carried by the body 20 and working within the slot 26. It will thus be noted that the two parts of the plunger are made to reciprocate or slide'in unison, the outer or exposed part being rotatable through an arc of 180.
As a means for deadlocking the plunger 16, the' cap thereof has been provided with a radial projection or lip 28 at one side, preferably opposite the slot 26, which lipis engageable on either side of a lug or stop 29 projecting from. one side of the case adjacent the face- It will thus follow, that the exposed or outer member of the latch may be rotated to swing the lip 28 outof the path of the stop 29 or opposite the same, as indicated in Fig. 1, in which event, the plunger 16 will be free sothat stop work mechanism may be operated as usual. In order t-hat-the'ca or the exposed niein ber of the plunger 16 may not 'be readily manipulated by the hand or by an implement, key controlled means have been provided for locking the same in and out of locking position with the stop 29. To accomplish this result, a pair of recesses or sockets 30 are provided in the outer end of the body 20, and extend to a point short of the inner end of the body, and the head 24 of the cap is provided with a pair of inner recesses or sockets 31 normally registering .VVllZh the recesses 30. The cap is provided with an outer slot or the recesses 31 in order to provide a' key hole opening for the insertion'of a suitable .key' for pressing the tumblers 34; inwardly.
The tumblers 32 which ordinarily lock the two parts ofthe plunger 16 against rotation relative to each other, may be released by means of a suitable key", such as is shown at 36 in Fig; 9. This key is provided with a pairof teeth or other projections of proper length that are adapted to be inserted through the key hole opening to contact with and force the tumblers 3 1 just sufliciently inward so as to brin v the contacting ends of the tumblers into the plane ofthe outer end of the body 20. This inward movement of the tumblers 34- will forcethe tumblers 32 inwardly out of the recesses 31 so that the cap orouter member ofthe'plunger may be rotated, as permittedby the slot 26. The respective pairs of recesses of the two parts of the plunger 16'are so arranged that the lip 28 maybe locked in engagement with the stop 29, on either side ot the stop, or may be'lockedin its reverse position, or away from the stop.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent, that when" the outer or exposed member of the plunger 16 is swung. to such a position that the lip 28"will stand opposite the stop 29, the stop workmechanism may be manipulated in the usual manner for dogging or releasing the outer knob. It is not possible to deadlock the stop work mechanism without the employment of a suitable key, and by the insertion of the key into the outer end of the plunger 16, the outer member of the plunger may be released and swung through an arc of 180, in order to engage the lip 28 either over the outer or inner face of the stop 29. Thus, when the plunger 16 is forced inwardly, the lip 28 will be swung over the inner face of the stop 29 to deadlock the stop work mechanism at such a position that the outer knob will be free to retract the latch bolt, and by swinging the lip 28 into engagement with the stop 29, when the plunger 16 is in outermost position, the stop work mechanism will be locked in dogging position or in position for deadlocking the outer knob.
This invention removes the possibility of the operation of the stop work mechanism from without the door by inserting a suitable implement between the door and the door jamb, and also removes the possibility of the unauthorized setting of the stop work mechanism by those persons unwarranted, who may have access to the inner side of the door. The authorized person, or person in possession of the key, may therefore deadlock the stop work mechanism at either position, as is desired.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawings, the advantages and capabilities of the present invention will be apparent, it being manifest that the present improvements are of a simple, efficient, and practical nature, and may be applied to stop work mechanisms now in use without much difficulty or expense. It is also of importance, that the stop work mechanism can be deadlocked through the medium of one of the plungers exposed through the face of the case, and not through one or the other side of the lock.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a movable member of a roll back stop work mechanism adapted to be carried by a case, operable means carried by the said member and adapted to be moved to a locking position within the case for locking the said member against movement.
2. In a roll back stop work mechanism, a plunger adapted to be carried by a case, and operable means movable with the plunger and adapted to be moved to a locking position within the case for locking the plunger against sliding.
3. In a roll back stop work mechanism, a plunger adapted to be carried by a case, and including a rotatable member adapted to be swung into locking position within the case to lock the plunger against sliding.

In combination with a movable member of a roll back stop work mechanism adapted to be carried by a case, operable means carried by the said member adapted to be moved to a locking position within the case at the opposite positions of the said member, and key controlled means carried by the said member to lock the said means in and out of locking position.

In a roll back stop work mechanism, a plunger adapted to be carried by a case and including operable means movable therewith adapted to be moved to a locking position within the case at opposite positions of the plunger to lock the plunger against sliding, and key controlled means for looking the said means in and out of locking posit-ion.

In a roll back stop work mechanism, a plunger adapted to be carried by a case and including a rotatable member adapted to be swung into locking position within the case at the opposite posit-ions of the plunger to lock the plunger against sliding, and key controlled means to lock the said member in and out of locking position.
7. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism to work through a case, embodying a body, and a sleeve rotatable thereon to rotate into and out of locking position within the case.
8. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism to work through a case, embodying a body, a sleeve rotatable thereon to rotate into and out of locking position within the case, and key controlled means for locking the sleeve in and out of locking position.
9. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism to work through a case, embodying a body, a cap fitting over the outer end thereof and constrained for rotation thereon to rotate into and out of locking position within the case.
10. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism to work through a case, embodying a body, a cap fitting over the outer end thereof and constrained for rotation thereon to rotate into and out of locking position within the case, the cap having a key hole opening therein, and key controlled means within the plunger for locking the cap in and out of locking position and accessible through the said opening.
11. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism to work through a case, embodying a body, a member carried thereby and actuable for deadlocking the plunger within the case, and a key controlled spring pressed member carried by one of said parts and engageable with the other.
12. In a plunger for roll back stop work mechanism to work through a case, a body, a sleeve rotatable thereon to rot-ate into and out of locking position within the case, and
a cap fitting over the outer end thereof, to
rotate into and out of locking position within the case, and a spring pressed key controlled member carried by the outer end of the body and engageable with the head of the cap.

A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism embodying a body, a cap fitting over the outer end thereof to rotate into and out of locking position, the body having a plurality of recesses in its outer end and the head of the cap having a plurality of inner recesses adapted to register with the recesses of the body, spring pressed tumblers slidable in the former recesses and projectable into the latter, the cap having a keyhole opening extending to the recess there- 1n, and means for constralnlng the cap for limited rotary movements on the body.
15. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism embodying a body, a cap fitting over the outer end thereof to rotate into and out of locking position, the body having a plurality of recessesin its outer end and the head of the cap having a plurality of inner recesses adapted to register with the recesses of the body, spring pressed tumblers slidable in the former recesses and engageable in the latter, and tumblers slidable in the latter recesses, the cap having a key-hole opening extending to the recesses therein.
16. A plunger for roll back stop work mechanism embodying a body, a cap fitting over the outer endthereof to rotate into and out of locking position, the body having a plurality of recesses in its outer end and the head of the cap having a plurality of inner recesses adapted to register in opposite positions with the recesses of the body, tumblers slidable in the former recesses, compression springs seated in the former recesses behind the tumblers for projecting them to engage the latter recesses, tumblers slidable within the latter recesses, the cap having a key-hole opening extending to the recesses therein, and having an arcuate slot in its flange, and a member-carried by the body working within the slot.
