Be it known that I, ALONZO JANEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beirne, Y
in the county of Clark andState of Arkan- `sas, have invented a new and useful Lock, of
which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a lock, and the invention aims to provide novel means whereby the y ent invention appertains.-
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as vthe description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a tubular casing including a front plate 2..
Projecting rearwardly from the front plate 2 and connected with the'front plate and with the casing is an upstanding iin 3. The bore of the casing 1 is denoted by the numeral 4 and is enlarged at its forward end to form a recess 18. In the fin 3 and in the casing 1 are formed vertical passages 6. Slidable in the passages 6 are locking bolts 7. Mounted in the passages 6 above the locking bolts 7 and bearing upon the upper ends of the locking bolts are compression springs 9. The upper ends of the springs 9 are engaged by a cap plate 1() united with the iin 8 by means of securing elements 11.
The springs 9 tend to forcethe locking bolts 7 inwardly.
Journaledvin the bore 4 of the casing 1 is a barrel 12 having a flange 14 received'for rotation in the recess 18 of the casing 1. Ap-
plied to the forward end of the barrel 12 is an auxiliary plate 15. The plate 15 may be held in place by securing elements 16, preferably screws,.extended through the ange 14 of the barrel 12, from the rear toward the front, so that thev cannot be removed fromthe front of the lock. Balls 20 are molded into the front plate 2. Balls 21. are 'mounted to rotate between the auxiliary plate 15 and the fiange 14 ofthe barrel 12.
The auxiliary plate 15 has a narrow key .hole slot 22. At the rear of the key hole slot 22, a recess 23 is formed in the auxiliary plate 15, and a wear plate 24 is mounted in the recess 23. The wear plate 24 has a key hole slot 25 registering with the key hole slot 22 in the auxiliary plate 15. In the forward end of the barrel 12 to the rear of the wear plate 24 is a laterally enlarged chamber 26 best shown in Fig. 3. A barrier 27 is mounted to swing in the chamber 26, crosswise of thebarrel 12 and has a beveled surface 27a. A pivot element 29 unites the lower end of the barrier `27 with the barrel 12. The barrier 27 is swung laterally so as to close the key hole slots 25-22, by means of a compression spring 28 interposed' between one edge of the barrier and the barrel 12. In the barrel 12 there are molded balls 31. It is necessary to locate the balls 31 to the rear of the balls 20 and 21, owing to the presence of the chamber 26. The barrel 12 hasl a key hole slot 32 registering with the key hole slots 22 and 25. Communicating lwith the key hole slot 22 in the barrel 12 are barrel 12-and overlaps the lugs 39 on the plate 40 to hold the plate on the barrel 12,-
so that when the barrel is rotated, the plate vwill be rotated also. rlhe ring 41 is attached by securing elements 42 to the rear end of the barrel 12. y
rlhe numeral 43 designates a casing hav'- ing an opening 44 in its rearwall, the casing including an annular 4rib 45 projecting into the opening. At 46 there appears a ring made up of an inner part 47 and an outer part 48.held together by screws 49. lThe parts 47 and 48 coperate to define a groove 50 which receives the rib 45, and thus the ring 46 is journaled for rotation on the casing 43. The parts 47 and 48 are provided. withV a slot 51 in which one end offthe plate 40 is received. The construction, therefore, is such that the casing 43 may be moved toward and away from the casing 1,'to accommodate doors of dierent thicknesses. The outer part 48 of the ring 46 is lprovided with ears 52 adapted to oo`l operate with'cross arms 53 carried by stems 54 which may constitute a part of an ordinary lockin bolt. The cross arms 53 are adapted to he engaged' by a head 55 on a .stem 56 constituting a part ofy a knob 57 journaled in the casing 43.
The numeral 58 designates a flat ing serration's or teeth 59. K
In practical operation, the key 58 is thrust through the key hole slots 22 and v.25 and key haventers the key hole slot 32 of thebarrel 12,
the beveled part 27a of the barrier. 27 permitting the barrier to be thrust to one side f by the key. The balls 37 on the inner ends of the tumblers 34 ride on the serrated edge 59 of the key. and facilitate the insertion of `the key. When the key is in Place, all of the tumblers 34'and the locking bolts7 are pushed outwardly until the lines of abutment 36 between the tumblers and-'the lock'- ing bolts are alined with the wall of the bore 4 of the casingl. Then, the barrel 12 maybe rotated by the key. When the barrel 12 is rotated, the plate 40 is rotated, the ring 46 is rotated, and the lugs 52, coacting withr the cr'oss arms53 will actuate the locking bolt of which the stems 54, constitute a part.V
When the key 58 is withdrawn from the keyhole slot, the tumblers '34 and the locking bolts 7 move inwardly into the positions shown in Fig. 2, the locking bolts 7 coacting with the barrel 12 to prevent the saine from rotating. VWhen the key is completely with- Land being provided at its vforward end with drawn, the barrier 27 swings over into the position of Fig. 3, under the action of the spring28 and closes the key hole.
The function of the balls 31, 20 and 21 will now beset forth. Owing to the`provision of these balls, it lwill be extremely difficult to drill into the lock and tamper with the same; lf `the drill strikes the hard metal balls, the balls will key and hold the drill, so y that the same will be likely to be snapped 0H.
Itis to be observed that the tumbers 34 are of dierent lengths, and this fact, comon the key 58 may be variously fashioned,A renders the unwarranted opening of the lock dicult off-accomplishment.

Having thus described is claimed is v A lock comprising a casing having a recess at its forward end; a barrel rotatable in the casing and provided at its forward4 end with a flange which is rotatable within the recess, the barrel having ya key hole slot 95 a laterally venlarged chamber communicating with the key hole slot; a barrier pivoted to the barrel and mounted to swing in the chamber transversely of the key hole slot; spring means inthe chamber for maintaining the barrierin closed positionwith respect to the'key hole slot; an auxiliary plate secured to the flange and constituting a clo sure for the forward end ofthe chamber, the auxiliary plate being rotatably mounted in the recess and having akey hole slot alined with the key hole slot of the barrel, the barrier having a beveled key-engaging portion 4alined with the keyhole slot of the auxiliary as my own, IV have hereto affixed my signa- ,12 turev in the presence of two witnesses.
