IMPROVEMENT IN FENCES.

This invention relates to an improvement in board fences, whereby-the wooden perishable posts are replaced by wronght-iron posts resting in cast-ironsockets, which, if properly painted, will lastan indefinite time.
The boards are bolted to the posts, instead of nailed in the usual way, and the cast-iron socket, which rests in the ground, is so shaped that it is easily driven into the ground, and also easily withdrawn, when it becomes desirable to remove the fence on account of high water, or other reasons.
It is not intended to furnish a cheaper fence than has been done before, but it will prove cheap in the end, on account of its permanence and durability, which involve a saving of time in making and material in construction.
1 make thepost A of flat wrought-iron, the size of which will vary according to the use to which it is intended.
The post A has on one side the notches B B B, or one for each board which is to be put on the fence.
The-foot of this post A fits into a spade-shaped 'socket, 1), or the socket I) may be cast into the post A, if desired.
From the peculiar spade-shape of the socket D, it can easily be pushed into the ground, or it may sometimes be necessary to use a sledge-hammer.
After the posts A A A are set up, the boards E E E are fastened thereto by means of the hooked bolts F F F, each bolt passing through two boards at the same time.
Between each of the posts A A A, I put vertical pieces of fence-board H H, and nail or bolt them to the horizontal boards E E E.
\Vhat I claim as my invention is- The \rronght-iroi'l post A, in combination with the cast-iron socket D and the hooked bolts F F F, substantially as and for the purpose described.
