Be it known that I, ALBERT A. CALLAIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plaquemine, in the parish of Iberville and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Fence-Post Brace, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to'fencefpost braces, the object of the invention being to provide an article of the character referred to which is applicable to any wooden post and adapted to form an efficient brace and support for the post, even in case said post has rotted away at the ground-line and broken oft'.

A further object of the invention is to make the said article adjustable, to the end that the post to which it is applied may be lined up true with the other posts and the general line of the fence.

VVhiletlie brace hereinafter described is particularly designed for use in connection with old weakened posts, it will be apparent that the article is equally useful in connection with new posts, and in the first construction of fences considerable material may be saved in that the brace adapts posts of smaller dimensions to be used. In other words, the posts may terminate at the ground-line and they may also be lighter in cross-section.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts herein fully described, illustrated, and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the fence-post brace, showing a post in elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fence-post brace detached from the post.

` The fence-post brace contemplated in this invention comprises, essentially, the main upright 1, the base 2, and the inclined brace member 3, the said parts being made out of suitable metal, such as iron or steel, malleable or cast, as may be found most expedient in practice and manufacture. The parts referred to may be made of strips of any deconvenient manner, as shown at 5, and near its upper end said upright is provided with a lateral lug or bracket extension 6, to which the upper end of the inclined brace member 3 is secured. In order to make an adjustable connection between ythe upright and brace member, the latter is provided with a slot 7 to receive a pin or bolt 8, which passes through the extension 6, and the latter may also be slotted, as shown at 9, to facilitate the adjustment referred to. In this way the upright may be set yin a perfectly vertical position after the base 2 has been planted firmly in the ground, which insures the proper lining up of the fence-posts and a thorough bracing of the same. The lower, end of the brace member 3 is fastened permanently to the base at the kpoint l0. The flexibility of the parts of the article, however, permits the adjustment referred to.

Old and weakened or broken posts may beV effectively reinforced by means of the brace hereinabove described, while in the construction of new fences a material saving of stock is effected in that shorter posts may be utilized, it being sufficient if said posts terminate at the ground. Furthermore, lighter posts may be used in the construction of fences without impairing the strength of the fences.
