Description

W. 1. RANDALL.
16, 1913. 1,081,404, 111111111111611 Dec. 16,1913.
WALTER I. RANDALL, OF GENOA, NEBRASKA.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 16,1913.
Application filed January 18, 1913. Serial No. 742,922.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER I. RANDALL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Genoa, in the county of Nance and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to door fasteners, and has special reference to a fastener designed to force a door closely shut.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a lever controlling latch, the latch being connected to the lever by a friction joint so that the latch will be released by the opening movement of the lever to thereby release the door.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in general of certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the latch in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the latch in an open position in full lines, and in a locked position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail section through the friction joint connecting the latch and its lever.
The invention has been herein shown as applied to a door 10 which is adapted to close against a jamb ll. The door l0 is provided with the recess 12 into which protrudes a staple 13 riveted into a malleable iron base 13. The base is secured on the outside of the door with staple protruding through into the recess. On the jamb 11 is a block 14 whereto is pivoted an elbow lever 15, the pivot of the lever being located at its angle. This lever is provided with a longer arm constituting a handle as indicated at 16, and with a short arm 17. To the end of the short arm is connected a latch 1S the connection being. by means of a screw bolt 19, a washer 20 being placed between the arm 17 and the end of the latch 18.
When using this device, let it be supposed that the parts are in the position shown in Fig. l. Then the door may be held tightly closed since the handle 16 will not rotate forward on account of striking against a teat 2l on block 14. Now, if the handle be moved to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2, the first action that takes place is that the pressure on the hook is relieved. Then, by reason of the friction joint, when the pressure becomes practically zero, the bill of the hook or the latch will be raised. In closing the door, the reverse operation takes place. There has thus been provided a simple and eiiicient device of the character described, and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention whatis claimed as new, is
The combination with a door and its jamb; of astaple carried by said door, an elbow lever pivoted at its angle to said jamb and provided on one end with a handle, the other end being iiattened, a latch hook provided with a flattened end, and a screw head bolt passing through said hook and lever to frictionally hold the flattened end of the latch hook against the fiattened end of the lever, whereby the lever may be turned to swing the hook out of engagement with said staple.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER I. RANDALL.
Witnesses:
S. E. PEARsoN, M. I. PUGSLEY.
