JOHN E.A FINLEY, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
Letters Patent No. 108,126, dated October 11, 1870.
IMPRVEMENT IN HAND CORN-SHELLERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom fit may conc/:fra
Be it known that I, JOHN E. FINLEY, of Memphis, county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have iuvented a new and useful Improvement in Hand Corn- Shellers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front View, showing the rough or diamond-shaped bars.
Figure 2-is a view of the back, showing the rivets and loops of the sheller.
A A A, rough or diamond-shaped bars.
B B B, rivets.
O C, loops.
D, leather, to which is fastened the hars A A A and loops C O.
I construct my sheller by taking a piece of sti leather or other pliable material, of the size to fit the inside of the hand, to which I attach three rough or diamond-shaped bars A A A, made of malleable or cast-iron, or other metal suitable for the purpose, by means ofthe rivets B B B. `To the leather backD,I attach two loops C C, the one set slanting, so as to fit the thumb of the wearer, the other to encircle the index-finger, and by this means hold the sheller securely to 'the hand when in use.
The manner in which I operate this sheller is by placing the thumb of the right hand through the slantiug loop, while th'e other loop encrcles the lndexnger of the same hand. I then grasp the ear of corn with the left-hand lirmly, and close the right hand with the Sheller, and, at the same time, givingr the right hand a rotary or circular motion; in tlus way the rough bars A A Asloosen the grains of corn from the cob.
The object of my invention is to furnish a protection to the hand, made of pliable material, and, at the same time, hold the rough bars in such a position as to shell the corn easily and expeditiously.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Pateut is As a new article of manufacture, the hand corn sheller herein shown, consisting of the flexible back D, plates A A A, serrated as shown, the rivets B B B, and loops O C, when all such parts are constructed as described, and arranged for operation, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
Witnesses: JOHN E. ,FINLEY.
