SEOVEL-HANDLE EXTENSION.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that T, Gnoncn ALBERT, a citizen of the "United States, residing at Salida, in the county of Chalice and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shovcl- Handle Extensions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to extensible handles and particularly to handles designed for use on shovels generally used by locomotive firemen or the like; and it has for an object the provision of a handle of this character which may be conveniently connected with the regular handle of the shovel so that required extension of the shovel may be made to facilitate scooping the coal after the latter reaches a remote point in the tender or tank and to also employ such form of extensible handle which can be removed from the main handle with facility when it is desired to employ a handle of con'iparatively short length.
A. further object of the invention is the provision of coope 'ating companion clamping plates which are adapted for locking engagement against the opposite sides of the main handle and means connecting the plates whereby to effectually retain the extensible handle in proper relative position to the main handle.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide an adjusting element which will be connected with the companion clamping plates in such manner as to positively prevent the plates from loss or accidental separation when the extensible handle is removed from the main handle.
l Vlt-ll these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Tn the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shovel, showing the application of the extensible handle thereto; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough; Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the companion clamping plates adjusted relatively whereby to permit the extensible handle to be readily removed from the main handle; l is a perspective view of the blank from which the hand gripping portions of the plate of the extensible handle is formed; llig. 5 is a perspective specification of Letters Patent.

view of the gripping portion of the main handle, showing the toothed surface thereof; F 6 is a perspective view of the other plate element of the extensible handle; and Fig. 7 is a section on line 7 of Fig. 1.
The shovel 1 herein illustrated is of the standard construction generally employed by locomotive firemen or the like, the shovel being shown to include a scoop 2 and a handle 3, the latter terminating in a grip t having a linger receiving passage 5 and a main hand gripping bar 6.
The extensible handle comprises companion clamping plates 7 and S of relatively dilferent lengths, the plate 7 being split preferably in its main length and then bent at right angles to the plane of the main clamping portion thereof so as to provide longitudinally extending spaced side bars 9, which are connected at their outer ends by a grip 10. At the immediate point of connection of the side arms 9 with the main body of the plate '7, the arms are curved so as to present embracing portions 11, which are adapted to lie in mutual contact with the outer surface of the gripping bars (3 of the main. handle. The plate 8 is correspondingly curved at 1: 2 to partly embrace the grip 6, while at the opposite end the plate 8 is curved inwardly at '13 and pro vided with biting teeth 141:, which are adapted to coiiperatc with similar teeth 16 on the curved end 17 of the plate 7 and engage the body 11 of the grip on the main handle of the shovel. This construction is such that when thc companion plates are in proper clamping contact with the opposite sides of the main handle of the shovel, the extensible handle will. be properly connected with the main handle whereby to materially increase the length of the shovel structure.
The plate 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 18, which is alined with an opening 20 in the plate 7. Said opening :20 has extended therethrough a screw 21, which is provided at one end with a manipulating head which is adapted to lie in mutual contact with the outer face of the plate. Said manipulating head has a kerf 23 for the reception of a suitable operating tool, which may be manipulated to permit the screw to be fed in a longitudinal direction in the receiving socket 241:. The receiving socket is extended throu h the elongated slot 18 and is preferably provided with a rectangular portion 25 which is associated with adjacent walls of the slot so that the latter forms stops to hold the sockets against rotation during the adjusting operation of the screw. The screw is accommodated in the socket by a thread 26 which receives the thread of the screw, and as illustrated the threaded bore of the socket is in open communication with a large smooth bore 27, the formation of the inner walls of the socket at the juncture of the bore 27 with the threaded bore of the socket is such as to provide an intervening stop shoulder 28. The bore 27 accommodates an upset portion or head 29 of the screw, the latter being adapted to engage against the stop shoulder whereby to limit the relative longitudinal adjustments of the screw and the socket. The socket 24 is provided with a relatively large head 30, which is adapted to engage against the outer face of the plate 7 so that the latter and the companion plate 8 may be brought to properly bear against the opposite sides of the main handle and thereby insure a proper connection between the latter and the extensible handle.
Tie plate 8 has its slot 18 terminating at different distances from the opposite ends of the plate, whereby said platemay be turned to the position shown in Fig. 3 to permit of the passage thereof through the finger receiving opening 5 in the main handle when the screw 21 is adjusted to one position and thereby efiect relative positions of the companion plates to permit the extensible handle to be conveniently removed from the main handle. The adjusting connection between the companion clamping plates is of such form as to prevent the casual separation or displacement of the plate from the connection when the extensible handle is removed.
The side bars 9 of the gripping portion of the extensible handle are preferably pressed in their main length whereby to possess substantially a concavo-convex configuration transversely and tiereby increase the rigidity of said arms.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as claimed.
