Description
TRA' BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB s. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA 3.
` l Patented Dec.2, 1913.

TRACER FOR PRGJECI'ILES;
.70 all whom it may concern.' a
Re it known that I, PAUL D. BUNKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Hancock, in the county of Monmouth and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tracers for Projectiles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will 'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to projec* tiles and more especially to tracers therefor, and it has for its purpose to provide a means whereby the trajectory of the projectile may ing any inaccuracy in the estimated range for firing.
The invention has for its further purpose to provide a device of this character which forms an attachment to, and is carried on the exterior of the projectile, and which is f of such construction and so located as to not offer additional resistance to that normally encountered by the rojectile iny flight.
lVith these and ot' 1er objects inview the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more 'fully hereinafter' disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims. A
The invention is shown by way of illustration in the accompanying drawing wherein* l indicates the projectile shown herein as being of the explosive type and having theA usual rotatingr band 2, and base 3 designed to be fitted with a fuse at 4.
The tracer consists of a. cap or casing 5 providihg, a chamber G for holding a combustible of a smoke producing or illuminating pyrotechnic substance, The casing. 5 is of reducing or parabolic design Vin cross section, and is constructed at its apex X to be tted with a fuse and provide an opening forthe emission. of the combustible. The casing is secured to the projectile 1 at. 'the base 7 thereof preferably through the medium of a ring or collar 8 which lits on the reduced portion 9 of the casing, and has its exterior surface 10 of the same contour as that of the casing 5.
Specification of Letters Pa tenti Patented nee. agiata.
Application led April 30, 1913. Serial No. 764,657.
The collar or ring is secured on the ca-sing i 5 by shrinkage or in any other suitable manner, and a pin 11' passes through said collar and engages with the casing as in the manner shown. The base 7 of the projectile has screw threads 12 for engaging with the screw threads 173 formed on the collar, and a thin metal ring or band 14 is interposed between the collar and the base of the projectile.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction, method of attachment to the projectile, and arrangement of parts without departing from the spiritI of my invention, and therefore I vdo not wish to be limited to such features exterior thereof and adapted to hold a combustible, theexterior surface of said casing conforming with the exterior surface of the projectile.
3. The combination with a projectile, of a tracer therefor comprising casing mounted Wholly exterior of and on the base of the projectile and of decreasing cross section therefrom, and adapted to hold av combustible, the exterior surface of said casing conforming with the exterior surface of the projectile.
aoy
4. The combination with a projectile, of a l tracertherefor comprising a casing mount-- ed on the base of the projectile and exterior thereof, and of substantially parabolic design in longitudinal cross section.
5.The combination with a projectile, of a. tracer therefor comprising a vcasing adapted to hold a combustible; and a ring detachably connecting the casing to the base of the projectile, and lying flush with the exterior surfaces of said casing and the projectile.
,-6. The combination with a project-i1e,- of a tracer therefor comprising a casing adaptled to hold a, combustible; and n' ruig carried by said casing and having screw connection with the base of the projectile.
' 7. The combination with a projecti1eof a tracer thereforcomprising a casing of parabolic design detachebly mounted on the l base of the projectile, and having the apex thereof constructed to be fitted With a fuse. 1o
In testimony whereof, I afix my signature, in presence of tWo Witnesses'.
' PAUL D. BUNKER. Witnesses:
ROBERT Enns KIMBALL,
WILLIAM H. SCHNAGKENBERG.
