APPLICATION FILED JUNE 15, 1910.

i1 FFICE.
(II-TABLES F. BLOCH, OF CALIFORNIA, MISSOURI.
PENCIL-SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnAnLns F. BLOCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at California, in the county of Moniteau and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Pencil- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil sharpeners of that type including a hollow conical rotary cutter into which the pencil is inserted to be sharpened by the blade of the cutter.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify pencil sharpeners of this type so as to be reliable and efficient in use, and in which the blade is spirally arranged so as to produce a drawing cut on the pencil and thus prevent the lead from breaking, as usually occurs from the scraping action of a straight blade.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined receptacle and support for receiving the shavings and for holding the cutter.
I/Vith these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claim appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a central transverse section thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the cutter.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawing, A designates a combined receptacle and support which forms the base of the device. This receptacle is in the form of a cup and consists of a bottom 1 and an upstanding marginal flange 2 that forms side and end walls, the cup being open at the top. Rising from the side walls are upwardly-extending arms 3 which support the rotary cutter B. This cutter consists of a hollow conical body 4 disposed horizontally between the arms 3. One end of the cutter body is open to receive the end of the pencil to be sharpened, and at this open end, the body t is externally reduced to Specification of Letters Patent.

provide a journal 5 that extends into a journal bearing 6 in one of the arms 3, and at this journal is formed a. shoulder (5 which engages the said arm 3 to prevent longitudinal movement of the cutter. The members 3 are spaced apart a distance less than the length of the cutter 1%, so that the latter cannot have axial movement after it is posi tioned, and consequently the journal 5 is maintained in the bearing (3 without any special fastening means. The opposite end of the cutter is formed with an enlarged head 7 which has its transverse end face bearing against the inner surface of the opposite arm 3, and in this latter arm is an opening 8 through which passes a journal 9 that has a crank 10 whereby the cutter can be turned. The cutter has a spiral groove 11 through which the shavings pass and at one side of this groove is a knife 12 fastened in any suitable manner. This knife is of spiral form and the cutting edge thereof extends into the hollow of the cutter body so as to shave down the pencil to a sharp point. By means of the spiral cutting edge of the knife,a drawing out is produced so that the tendency to breakage of the lead is reduced to a minimum. The shavings drop out of the slot of the cutter into the receptacle 01' out under the same and are there collected.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired are within the scope of the claim appended hereto.
Having thus describcd the invention, what I claim as new, is
A device of the class described comprising a receptacle, a pair of parallel arms being.
formed on the said receptacle and projecting upwardly therefrom, the said arms being provided adjacent their upper ends with alining openings, a rotary cutter disposed between said arms and having one of its ends reduced for the reception of the opencess in the adjacent end receiving the said ing within the adjacent arm, the pencil opencrank end. 1 ing in the cutter extending inwardly from In testimony whereof I aflix my signature the said end thereof and an operating crank in presence of two witnesses.
