Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, OSCAR ERIKSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Maguire, in the county of Dunklin and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in harrows, and relates more particularly to harrows of the flexible type which accommodate themselves to the irregularities of undulating surfaces.
The objects of the invention are to provide a novel and improved form of harrow, of the type set forth, which is of economical and simplified structure, and to also provide a harrow that can be effectively and easily operated.
Further the invention consists in certain details of construction hereinafter specifically referred to, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a harrow constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail top plan view of the foremost end of the harrow; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view, partly broken away, of a modified form of unit or section.
The harrow consists of a plurality of units or sections 1, which are of substantially rectangular block-like form and may be constructed of wood, or metal, as desired. The sections or units are preferably arranged so that the general conformation of same is substantially triangular in order to more effectively and easily operate the harrow. The foremost end of the harrow is formed of two spaced parallel units separated by a spacing block 2, the front end of which latter is flush with the front ends of the said two units, a bolt 3 being passed through said two units and through the legs 4 of a U-shaped member 5 which provides a protective covering for the front end of the harrow. A plate 6 is secured, by any suitable fastening means to the top faces of the two foremost units and to the top face of the spacing block 2, the front end of the plate beingcontracted and formed with a depending hook 7 which extends over the front end of the block 2 and connects with a chain 8 by means of which latter the harrow is connected to a sWingle or double tree. Each unit bears a tooth 9 which latter are threaded to receive nuts 10 and 11 that engage on the bottom and top faces, respectively, of the units, washers being preferably arranged on the said faces of the units, against which the nuts abut. The teeth are preferably arranged centrally of the lengths of the units, the ends of adjacent sections being pivotally connected by bolts 12 which are of successively increasing length to a point at the greatest width of the harrow, from which point the sides of the harrow taper to the rear end thereof, the spaces between the sections of which rear end are closed by other of the spacing blocks 2. A bolt 13 extends through all of the rear spacingblocks 2 and the rear ends of the rearmost units. The front end portion, on the outer side of each outer unit is preferably cut away at 14: to thereby provide seats for the bolt heads and the nuts thereof, so as to prevent the said bolt heads and nuts from projecting beyond the outer sides of the units. This arrangement also acts to prevent injury to the bolt heads or units, which latter would be possible, were the bolt heads or units permitted to extend beyond the outer sides of the units. The units are arranged in transverse spaced series so that each end of each unit, excepting the outermost side units, is pivoted to and between the confronting ends of pairs of adjacent units, whereby the harrow is possessed of great flexibility which allows same to accommodate itself to any irregularities of the ground on which the harrow is used.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, a modified form of unit 1 is illustrated, in which Same is formed of sheet metal into hollow form, the unit having apertures to receive the connecting bolts and the teeth which latter are omitted from the figure.
By reason of the triangular formof the harrow it will be seen that the two front teeth first enter into action, after which the rear teeth which successively increase in numbers, enter into action on the soil, thus more effectively and easily working the soil.
What is claimed is:
1. In a harrow, a series of units arranged in transverse spaced series, the units ofeach series being spaced fro-1n each other, the ends of the units of the intermediate series being arranged in the space between the units of adjacent series, a tooth borne by each unit centrally of the length thereof, the
foremost end of the harrow having but two units, a spacing block arranged in the space between said two units, a Ushaped member having its legs engaged over the outer faces of said two units and having its intermediate portion engaged with the outer ends of each of said two units and the outer end of the spacing block, a plate seating on the top faces of said two uni-ts and the top face of the spacing block and secured to said block and two units and having a contracted front end which extends downwardly and formed with a hook, the units being ar ranged so that the same present a substantially triangular configuration, the forward end portion at the outer side of each outer unit being cut away, and bolts for connecting the units having heads which seat in said cutaway parts.
2. In a harrow, a series of units arranged to form a substantially triangular conformation, the forward ends of the outer sides of the outer units being cut away, bolts connecting the units and having their heads arranged in said cutaway portions, and teeth carried by the units;
3. In a harrow, a series of pivotally connected units, the forward end of the harrow having a pair of spaced units, a spacin block arranged in the space between said pair of units, a U-shaped member having its intermediate portion engaged over the outer ends of said pair of units and the outer face of the spacing block and having its legs engaged with the outer side faces of said pair of units, and a plate seating on the upper faces of the pair of units and the upper face of the spacing block and having a hook c011- nected thereto.
