HENRY B. CONNERS, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
HINGE.
1,079,215. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NO". 1 8, 1913- Application filed November 21, 1912. Serial No. 732,756.
To all whom it may concern: in contour, and the two main leaves and (3 Be it known that I, IIENRI B. CoNNnR-s, are materially larger than the supplemental a citizen of the United States, residing at leaves and are approximately C-shapcd with Sioux City, in the county of Voodbury and their open portions disposed inwardly to- 60 5 State of Iowa, have invented new and useful ward the pintle. T are respectively formed at the upper and 70 15 The improved hinge is constructed in such lower extremities of the inner portion of manner that the butt hinge members 1' said leaf and have their respective upper leaves are cut from and located intcrmediand lower ends coincident with the upper ately of the strap members or leaves and the and lower ends of the said leaf, whereas the knuckles of the several leaves are so formed leaf 8 has a i gl i t rm di t k u kl of 75 011 the I' P l aves as to alinc fOI' movelongated form at its inner edge to lit in beable association through the medium of a tween the knuckles 10 and 11, the distance single pintle, and said knuckles are also disbetween the upper and lower ends of the posed in such manner relatively to their reknuckle 12 and the upper and lower edges spective leaves as to materially increase the of the leaf 8 being precisely equal to the 0 strength of the hinge organization at the length of the knuckles 10 and 11, and the points of assemblage of the leaves by supupper and lower portions of the inner porporting and reinforcing each other as Well tion of the lea t' 8 are recessed to receive the as more uniformly equalizing the strain or knuckles l0 and 11 of the lea l T. The main weight tension of the door over all of the leaf 5 has knuckles l3 and 14 formed at the 5 knuckles and different portions of the pintlc. inner edge thereof terminating coincidcntly An embodiment of the invention is illuswith the upper and lower edges of the inner trated in the accompanying drawing, opening of said leaf, the upper and lower whereof: edges of the knuckles 13 and I l terminating Figure 1 is a fragmental view of a door respectively at a distance inwardly from the frame and door connected by the improved upper and lower ends of the leaf 5 so as to hinge, the door being shown as partly closed; form seats for knuckles 15 and 16 located Fig. 2 is'an enlarged horizontal section taken at the upper and lower portions of the lea l on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, showing the door 6, the respective upper and lower ends of both as partly closed and as fully closed, the the knuc dos 15 and 16 terminating coincilatter position being indicated by dotted dently with the upper and lower edges of lines; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the the said leaf 6. It will be seen that when hinge itself. the knuckles as just explained are associated As shown in said drawing, the hinge emin longitudinal alinement, the pintle 9 may bodies pairs of main and supplemental membe readily inserted therethrough, and the i hers or leaves 5, 6 and 7, 8, all of which parts knuckles 13 and 14 of the leaf 5 are respec- ,are provided with knuckles, as hereinafter tivcly supported on the knuckle 10 of the described, for the reception of a single pinleaf 7 and the knuckle 16 of the leaf 6, tle 9. Each supplemental leaf is produced whereas the knuckles 10, 11 and 12 of the by cutting or stamping out a section from leaves 7 and 8 are held between the knuckles the inner central portion of the main leaf 5 of the leaves 5 and 6 to form a very rigid or 6, or if desired all four leaves may be support and a strong intermediate connecstamped or cut out from a blank at a sintion through the medium of leaves 7 gle operation, there being no waste metal reand 8 between the door and frame. The snlting from the construction of the leaves knuckles 13, 15 and 14, 16 of the leaves 5 from the blank. The two supplemental and 6 support the pintle ends and embrace a leaves 7 and 8 are substantially rectangular considerable portion of said pintle ends to provide a positive end reinforce and thereby give the central portion of the pintle a more rigid resistance against bending by the weight strain of the door concentrated thereon through the leaves 7 and 8. light weight hinge of economical structure can thus be used to do heavy work.
In associating the members of the hinge, the knuckles 10, 11 and 12 of the leaves 7 and S are assembled or the leaves have their inner ends disposed in normal positions, and the knuckles 13, 1 1, 15 and 16 of the leaves 5 and 6' are likewise normally positioned and the knuckles 10, 11 and 12 then inserted between the knuckles 13 and 1 1, and the pintle 9 is finally passed through all of the knuckles, thus leaving the leaves 7 and 8 free to move between'the leaves 5 and 6. It will be seen that the leaves 7 and 8 are of similar dimensions and likewise the leaves and 6.
To attach the hinge,
the main leaves 5 and l (3 are aflixed by screws 17, or the like, to the front or outer faces of the door frame 18 and door 19, respectively, and the supplemental 1 leaves 7 and 8 are similarly fastened by the I screws 20, or other devices, to the side or edge faces of said frame and door, the arrangement of parts being obviously such that each main leaf is disposed at right angles to its companion supplemental leaf, and its screws 17 at right angles to the screws 20. It will be seen, therefore, that'the leaves 7 and 8 form what may be considered a butt hinge and the leaves 5 and 6 constitute a strap hinge, the two hinges being connected 1 by the pintle 9', which is common to both, so that the resultant structure presents the com: 1 bined advantage of both forms of hinge. By reason of the specified arrangement of the fastenings 17 and 20 it will be apparent that both sets of fastenings sustain the weight of l the door and the tendency to loosen either set by the pulling strain imposed thereon is offset or prevented'by the corresponding set"; at right angles thereto-or at right angles to the direction of the weight strain of the Gopies'of this patent may be obtainedfor five cents 7 door. By making knuckles.
7 owing to each other on the pintle,
the knuckles on the main leaves of half-length, and reversely arranging them, the requisite movements of the door are permitted without interference on the part of the knuckles, and the cost of manufacture is lessened since no vertical bending of the arms is necessary to offset the Finally, an initial individual adof all of the leaves is obtainable, their mounting upon a common pintle, and the, hinge, as a whole, thus rendered attachable to doors and door frames of various shapes and dimensions.
I claim A hinge comprising two strap leaves of equal dimensions having upper and lower knuckles, two butt hinge leaves consisting of rectangular sections of the same size cut from the intermediate portions of the strap leaves and having knuckles at their inner j ustm ent portions, the knuckles of the one butt hinge leaf being at the upper and lower ends of the leaf and the other butt hinge leaf having a single knuckle at the inner edge between the ends thereof to fit between the end knuckles of the other butt hinge leaf, the knuckles of the butt hinge leaves being held between the innermost knuckles at the upper and lower ends of the strap leaves, the two sets of knuckles being disposed in vertical alinement, and a single pintle inserted through and connecting the knuckles of all the leaves, the strap leaves and the butt hinge leaves being movable independently of the knuckles of both pairs of leaves supporting each other and operating to distribute the weight strain imposed on the leaves equally over different portions of the pintle to avoid bending of the pintle.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
