To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT J. \VARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corridon, in the county of Reynolds and State of Missouri have invented new and useful Improvements in Stump-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to stump pullers and has for an object to provide apparatus of this character which will include relatively adjustable pulling and clamping members which are mounted upon a rocking support, which latter can be rocked manually so as to effect relative adjustments of the said pulling members with a minimum expenditure of power and with the resultant maximum application of pull upon the stump.

In the drawing forming a portion of this application and in which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure l is a perspective View of the stump puller showing the same operatively associated with a stump. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the rocking base tilted to effect an extraction of the stump.

The apparatus comprises a rocking base 1 which is provided with a curved ground engaging surface 2. This member has a vertical bracket 3 secured thereto as at 4, and as shown this bracket is disposed in spaced parallel relation to a similar bracket 5. The bracket 5 is secured as at 6 upon the base 1 and as illustrated it extends forwardly as at 7 from the bracket 3 and it is then oflset as at 9 so as to provide an extremity 10 which directly overlies a similar extremity 11 upon the rocking bar 12. cured thereto an actuating member 15 which may be actuated manually so as to impart rocking movements to the base 1. The extremity 10 of the bracket 5 is provided with a gripping or pulling member 16 which is preferably in form of a chain which is secured at 17 to one side of the extremity 10. The opposite end of the chain has its links interchangeably engaged with a suitable hook 18 upon the opposite side of said extremity 10. The extremity 11 of the bar 12 is provided with a gripping or pulling chain 19 which is identical in construction with the chain 16.

in operation the companion lifting chains 16 and 19 are operatively made to embrace the stump to be extracted as shown in Fig. l of the drawing. Pressure is then brought to bear upon the member 15 with the resultant roc-king of the base 1. It is evident that when the required rocking movement is imparted to the base 1 the gripping members 16 and 19 of the apparatus will be effec tively made to extract the stump.

I claim 2- A stump puller comprising a rocking member, a pair of brackets rising from the member, a bar secured between the brackets and extending at an angle to the rocking member a gripping device adjustably secured to the bar, and a gripping device adjustably secured to one of the brackets and disposed above the first gripping device.
