Be it known that I, lNI-LLLAM J. MCLEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, havey invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cor.- set-Fasteners; and 1 do hereby decl-are the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-tion of the invention, such as will. en,- able others skilled the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in' corset clasps, and hasfor its object to provide a device of the above character in which all the fasteners may be released simultaneously, thereby eliminating the usual strain accompanying the release of such devices..
Another object of my invention is to provide a corset fastener which may be re- ,I

A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the above character which will firmly and securely hold the sections together and prevent any accidental displacement of the same.
With the above and other objects in view, 1 will now proceed to describe my invention in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved corset fastener; Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of one of the clasps; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail view of one of the clasps; and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fastener as it would appear when assembled.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 indicates the usual steel carried by one edge of the corset, and 2 indicates a steel which is adapted to coperate with the previously mentioned steel and secured to the opposite edge of the corset. rlthe steel 1 is provided at intervals with the clasps 3, which are riveted or otherwise secured to the same. These clasps 3 preferably comprise a base portion 4, having formed integrally therewith the upstanding ears 5. These upstanding ears are provided intermediate the ends of the bas-e portion L1 and at the side edges thereof. rl`he upper portion of the clasp, indicated at 6, is provided at one extremity with the angularly extending end portion 7, which is provided with a camming surface 8, the use Spec-caton of LettersfPatent.

A suitable stud 11 is secured to the base portion. and a similar stud 12 is secured to the upper portion. These studs are placed in direct a-l-iaaement and are adapted to -receive the ends of a coil spring 13, by means of which the end 7 is forced against the base porti-on, as clearly illustrated in- Fig. 4. The baise .portion may be curved or bent over the spring; vto form a. guard therefor and protect the top of the spring.
lThe steel 2. has secured to one surface the clasps 8, carried by the co-acting steel 1, contact with the steel 2. The steel 2 is provided with apertures 15, through which the ends 7 of the upper members 6 of the clasps are adapted to extend. rl`hese apertures are formed in the steel at such intervals as will bring the clasps in direct alinement with the apertures when the device is in place.
A longitudinally extending bar 16 is slidably mounted on the steel 2 and is provided with apertures which are adapted to register with the apertures in the steel when in its normal position. This longitudinally slidable bar is secured to the steel by means of the U-shaped members, which prevent the same from becoming displaced but allow free longitudinal movement of the same. r1`he lower extremity of the bar is provided with an aperture, through which one link of the chain 17 carrying the ring 18 is adapted to pass. The upper extremity of the bar has secured thereto the lug or pin 19, to which is secured the lower extremity of the spring 20. This spring 20 has its opposite end secured to the steel 2, by means of the lug or pin 21, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. The clasps are so positioned that their beveled surfaces will be upward, and it will be obvious that when the same are in position, should it for any reason be desirable to release these clasps, the only movement necessary is to pull on the chain which will cause the bar to slide downwardly and, owing to the action of the upper wall of t-he apertures against the beveled surfaces of the clasps,
it will be obvious that the ends of the claspsV will be forced outwardly and the parts separated without the usual inconvenience accompanying the removal of such garments.
While in the foregoing I have shown and described the preferred embodiment 0f my invention, I wish it to be understood that I may change the specific arrangement of parts Within th-e scope of my claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is: j

In combination with a corset a fastener comprising steels secured to the ends of the corset, clasps secured to one of said'steels,` angular projections formed at one end ofl the clasps, said angular projections adapted to extend through apertures in the other of said steels, a bar slidably mounted on` the second mentioned steel intermediate the steel and the clasp, said bar having apertures therein, said apertures being adapted to register with the apertures in the steel and receive the ends of the angular projections formed on the clasp, and beveled surfaces on the angular projections on said clasps thereby forming catches, whereby When the cured to the face of the second mentioned steel, a bar yslidable between the U-shaped members and the steel, said bar having aperu tures therein adapted to register with the apertures formed in the steel, and beveled surfaces formed in the ends of the projections formed on. the clasps, said beveled surfaces adapted to coperate With the longitudinally slidable bar and thereby release the clasps when the bar is moved down# wardly.
