JOHN T. BELL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
DAVIT TACKLE-BLOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 23, 1913.
Application filed May 11, 1912. Serial No. 696,719.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Davit Tackle- Block, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a davit hook and its object is to produce a hook which will release the boat therefrom as soon as the boat touches the water.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that whenever a boat is suspended from the ordinary davit hook that it is quite a difiicult matter to release the boat from the hook when the boat strikes the water because the hook will not let go of its own accord, but must be removed from the ring by which it is connected with the boat by hand. This is sometimes the cause of capsizing the boat, and at best in a heavy sea it is a dangerous matter.
WVith the invention herein disclosed all danger of capsizing the boat, or failure to get the same loose from the davit block is obviated since the block releases the boat as soon as the weight is released therefrom.
In the drawings in which the same numeral of reference is applied to the same portion throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the davit block showing this hook applied thereto, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the davit block and hook at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the davit hook and block showing the hook in the position it occupies when the weight carried thereby has been released therefrom.
The numeral 1 represents the ordinary pulley block within which is the usual pulley wheel 2. At the lower end there is a supporting iron 3 for the davit hook 4:, and at the upper end there are two cars 5 and 6 for seeming one of the parts of the rope adequately to the block, a pin 7 being used to connect the block and rope.
The davit hook is circular as indicated at 8 and it has a weighted handle 9, which lies closely adjacent the side of the block when the hook is weighted with the load it is intended to carry.
In operation the hook hangs as indicated in Fig. 2 when loaded, but as soon as the boat touches the water and releases its weight from the block, the hook will fall down into the position shown in Fig. 3 and will permit the escape therefrom of the boat ring. If, for any reason, the hook should not at once release itself from the boat it is a very easy matter to pull down the handle 9 and compel it so to do.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
A davit tackle block comprising a block, a pulley wheel carried thereby, a rope securing pin above the block, and a pivoted hook secured to the block below the pulley on an axis at right angles to the pulley axis, said hook having a portion inclining upwardly to the side of the bottom of the block and a handle portion terminating in a ring extending along the side of the block and in contact therewith parallel to the plane of movement of the pulley, said ring being above the pulley axis, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 20th day of April, A. D. 1912, in the presence of the two subscribed witnesses.
JOHN T. BELL.
Witnesses C. P. GRIFFIN, L. H. ANDERSON.
