PATENT OFFICE.
ANTHONEY N. ANDERSON, OF JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA.
DETACHING DEVICE FOR LIFE- BOATSQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,809, dated June 7, 1904.
Application filed January 4, 1904.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LANTI-ionnY NIANDERsOn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jack- Improvements in Detaching Devices for Life: Boats; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of'ithe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved detaching device adapted for use in lowering life-boats to instantly free them from the lowering-tackle and also adapted for use in other connections; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the detaching device embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a central view of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is asimilar view taken on the plane indicated by the line b b of Fig. 2.
i In the embodiment of my invention I provide a block 1, which is. preferably made of metal and has a transverse opening. 2 in its lower side adapted to receive the ring secured in the bow or stern of a life-boat. In the upper side of the blockisan eye 3 for the ad justment of the tackle for raising andlowering the boat. A segmental recess 1 is made one side of the block, as at 5, andis disposed on one side of the opening 21 At the outer end of the said segmental recess is arcurved way 6, in which operates a bolt 7, which is adapted to be extended across the opening Qto engage the boat-ring to lock the block to the boat-ring, as indicated in Fig. 3, in which the boat-ring is designated at c. The bolt 7 has an arm 8,
which operates in. the segmental recess 4 and is provided at its inner end with a sleeve-eye 9, through which extends a pivot-pin 10, the latter being mounted. for revolution in an opening 11, with which the block is provided. The said pivot-pin has on one side a key 12,
which operates in a segmental recess 13, with Serial No. 187,746. (No model.)
which the eye of the arm 8 is provided, the ends of the said recess forming stops 1 1 15. Hence the pivot-pin is revoluble to some extent independently of the arm 8 and when its key engages one ofthe stops causes the said arm to turn with it, and thereby move the bolt 7.
A lever-arm 16 is rigidly secured .to one end of the pivot-pin 10 and is provided at its outer end with a weight 17 which is here shown as a spherical enlargement thereof.
When the bolt is closed, the arm 16 is turned to the position indicated in full lines in Fig. 1, thereby causing the key of the pivot-pin to engage the stop 15 and lock the bolt 7 in a closed position. Prior to lowering the boat the lever 16 must be moved to the left to the position indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thereby causing the key of the pivot-pin toengage the stop 14; but the weight of the boat hanging from the bolt 7 retains the latter in a closed position'until the boat is lowered to the water, when its buoyancy causes the tackle to slacken, and thereby relieve the tension on the bolt 7 whereupon the lever 16 by reason of its gravitating weight 17 turns the pivot-pin still farther in the same direction, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1, thereby turning the arm 8 with it, and hence moving the bolt 7 to unlocking position to disengage'the said bolt from the boat-ring, hence instantly detaching the latter from the lowering-tackle.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
. Various changes in theform, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A detaching device comprising a'block, a pivot-pin mounted therein and having a weighted lever projecting therefrom and disposed at an angle with reference thereto, and a locking-bolt pivotally connected to the pivotpin, the latter having partial revolution independently of the bolt.
2. A detaching device, comprising a block having a segmental recess and a boltivay, a 5 locking-bolt in the latter, an angularlyqnm able arm in the segmental recess connected to the bolt to actuate the same, a pivot-pin in said arm connected thereto for partial revolution independently thereof, and a weighted lever attached to the said pivot-pin.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto setmy hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
