UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK MILLER, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOB OF 'IWVO- THIRDS TO FRANK V. CHAPPELL AND THOMAS E. HICKEY, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED CHQCK AND GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,399, dated August 27, 1901.
Application filed May 6,1901. Serial No. 58,915. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of New London, in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Chock and Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The chief object of this invention is to'provide a simple, cheap, and convenient form of chock and guide for use with guy-ropes, my said invention being specially valuable for use in discharging coal and the like cargoes from the holds of vessels. I have therefore illustrated the said invention as applied to and used with the hatch-coaming of a vessel.
Figure 1 illustrates in vertical transverse section a portion of a deck and hatchway having my improved device arranged in proper relation to the said hatchway, and
ig. 2 is a plan view of portions of the same parts. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of my improved chock and guide; and Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the same, taken on line 4 4 of said Fig. 3.
It has been most common heretofore to use in connection with the hoisting-cable that carries the bucket a guy-rope that is simply held by the attendant or is passed around a belaying-pin or chock in order to afiord a somewhat better purchase, and my present invention seeksto provide a more conveniently-located device than such chocks or belaying-pins and one from which the guy-rope may be readily removed when the bucket is hoisted above the hatch-opening.
In the annexed drawings the letter a denotes the deck of a vessel, and b the coaming of the hatch.
c indicates'the bucket, cl the cable that supports said bucket, and d the guy-rope, the latter being connected with the cable (1 by a pulley e, that serves as a runner to allow the free rendering 'of said cable when the bucket is raised or lowered.
Secured to the hatch-coaming is my new chock and guide, consisting of a clamp whose body portion is formed of a bar h, having its ends bent at right angles thereto, as at h 7L2,
the inner face of the shorter arm 77. being provided with one or more spurs 2'. The longer arm h is bored parallel with the bar 7i and is tapped to receive a clamp-screw k, whose free end is provided with an operating handle and whose inner end has loosely mounted thereon a plate m, provided with spurs m.
The arrangement of the described parts is such that the axial center of the screw 70 is in alinement with the spur 't'.
Swiveled on the top or outer face. of the bar h is a book a, that may revolve freely on said bar.
Then it is desired to use my described chock and guide, it is securely clamped to the hatch-coaming, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, and the guy-rope d is placed within the hook at. The attendant may then lead the guy-rope in any direction most convenient for himself, and the swivel-hook will automatically swing to meet his movements. When the bucket descends into the hatchway, the guy-rope is so held and controlled by the attendant that the said bucket will be held from contact with the hatch-coaming, the pulley e meanwhile permitting the cable (1 to run freely and the hook it affording a purchase that enables a single guy-tender to control the movements of the bucket with ease and certainty. When the empty bucket is raised out of the hold of the vessel and passes above the hatchopening, the guy-rope is thrown clear of the hook at and the pulley e is carried upward by the bucket-cable.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In combination, in a chock and guide, a bar h, a hook swiveled on said bar, and means for removably clamping said bar to a hatchcoaming consisting of a fixed jaw and a cooperating screw-controlled movable jaw, all substantially as described.
Signed at New London, Connecticut, this 30th day of March, 1901.
FRANK MILLER. Witnesses:
