APPARATUS FOR RAISING SUNKEN VESSELS AND LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL A. OLsoN, a
citizen of theUnited. States, and residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Raising Sunken Vessels and the like, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to apparatus for raising sunken vessels and particularly to appanatus of this class employing pontoons which are connected with the sides of the hull, and the object of my invention is to provide improved means for attaching the pontoons to the hull of a vessel; and a further object being to provide means for equalizing the lifting power of each pontoon through a plurality of connections with the hull; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in an apparatus of the class and for the purpose specified, constructed and operating as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a hull of a vessel showing two pontoons connected therewith;

In the drawing, I have indicated at 10 the hull of a vessel and when it is desired to raise a sunken vessel, a plurality of boltlike attachments 11 are connected with the hull at spaced intervals as indicated in Fig. 1, said attachments comprising a threaded shank portion 12 which passes into and through the hull, a central collar 13, a re duced neck portion 14 and a tapered'head portion 15.
Theattaching devices 11 may be connected with the hull in any desired manner but are preferably connected by means of the diving bell construction shown in my prior application Serial No. 230,221, filed Apr. 23,1918.

s In Figs. 1 and 2, I have shown at 16 a pontoon or pontoons of the usual or any desired form and construction and, in the practice of my invention, I provide the op posite end portions of the pontoon with straps 17 in the lower ends of which are mounted pulleys 18 over and around which pass a cable 19 tothe ends of which are secouplings 20 consist of upwardly directed hollow conical heads 21 which form sockets for the ends of the cables 19 and downwardly directed yokeshaped head portions 22 provided with a large central aperture 23 and a smaller arcshaped aperture 24 which is adapted to re ceive the reduced neck portion 14: of the attaching device 11 as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The downwardly directed yoke-shaped portions 1 1 of the couplings 20 are provided at the opposite sides thereof with outwardly directed lugs 25 which are inclined downwardly and inwardly. Suspended from the cable 19 between the pul1eys18 of each pontoon 16 is a pulley device 26 carrying a cable 27 to the lower end of which is connected a coupling 20 similar in all respects to the cpuplings 20 secured to the ends of the ca The above construction forms an equalizing mechanism for the pontoons which will equalize the lifting power of thecables 19 the couplings 20 regardless of the position or location of the attaching devices 11 in the hull, and this is clearly illustrated at the left of Fig. 1 of the drawing.
It will be understood that the pontoons may be connected with the attaching devices 11 secured to the hull in any desired manner or with any suitable apparatus, and when the required number of pontoons have been connected with the hull the water or other substance therein is pumped out in the usual or any desired manner and the vessel may be raised, but as above stated, my invention is not limited to the form, construction and operation of the pontoons, and for this reason the detail construction thereof has not been shown nor described, the only essential feature being the equalizing mechanism employed, and while I have shown a specific construction for carrying my invention into efiect, I am not limited to the details of this construction, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without parting from the spirit of my inventionor sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my lnvention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for raising sunkenvessels, a plurality ofpontoons, an equalizing mechanism for said pontoons comprising a plurality of pulleys suspended beneath each pontoon, a cable passed over and around said pulleys, couplings connected with the ends of said cable, a pulley device mounted on and movable longitudinally of said cable between said first named pulleys, a cable suspended from said last named pulley device and a coupling connected with said last named cable.

In an apparatus for raising sunken vessels, a plurality of pontoons, an equalizing mechanism for said pontoons comprising two pulleys connected with each pontoon, a cable passed over and artund said pulleys, coupling-members connected with the free ends of said cable, anojher pulley mounted on Copies ofthis patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
