Letters Patent No. 107,304, dated' September 1.3, 1870. ,Y
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
'I'he Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.l
To all persons to whom these presents may come;
Be it known that I, DANIEL C. STILLSON, of Charlestown, in the county ol' Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Screw- Wreneh; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawing, which denotes a side elevation of my said invention. v
My invention relates nto that class of wrenches 'in which the leverage or power of the wrench ishangmented in proportion as the width or diameter of the article to be grasped or to be operated on is increased. ln ordinary wrenches the reverse of this is the case,
y that is, the greater the dialneteroi1 the object grasped,
the less the leverage.
My invention is an improvement upon the pipe- \\'reneh, as patented` by me on the 12th day of Oe tober, A. D. 1869, and consists'in so simplifying and n'loditzying'the construction of the parts ot' the said pipe-wrench as to produce a strong, compact, and dur# able screw-wrcnch.
ln the said drawing- A denotes the shank otthe wrench, to which a handle, A', is applied in the usual manner.
B is the fixed or stationary jaw, which is formed on the outer end of the shank A, the same being of a rectangular shape, and having its inner orrbearingsurface at a right angle to the shank.
(l is a hollow rectangular-flame, which abnts against the rear portion of the stationary jaw, and embraces .the shank A, and is firmly fastened to the latter.
The said frame extends upward from the shank A, and infolds the'shank D of the movable jaw B, whose Ainner face stands at a right angle toits shank, and
parallel to Vthe inner face ofthe jaw B. The shank of the movable jaw Bfhaving a male screw-thread cnt upon it, extends through a corresponding nut, F, arranged within a slot` or chamber y made transversely through the frame, as shown in the drawing. Byturning the said nut tothe right or left,
the adj nstable jaw will be correspondingly'moved to' My improved screw-wrench, consisting of the fixed and movable jaws B E, the shanksA D, the frame C, and the nut ll, the said frame being rigidly atiixed to,
the shank A, and all the parts arranged in manner as shown and described.
Witnesses: DANIEL C.` STILLSON.
'E P. HALE,
Giras. GAY.
