FOLDABLE SWING-SEAT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, ADAM K. BOWMAN and CHARLES J. MOKNI HT, citizens of the United States, residing at Greensburg, in the county of W'estmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foldable Swing- Seats, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to foldable swing seats of that type disclosed in our companion application filed under even date.

Besides having the majority of objects in view disclosed in our companion application, we aim by the present invention to provide a seat having foldable parts; a seat frame capable of being folded into parallelism with the back of the swing seat, and arms capable of being swung inwardly into parallelism with the folded seat frame and locked in engagement therewith.

' e accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a foldable swing seat in accordance with our invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the swing seat, Fig. t is a planof a portion of the seat folded, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a detached bracket forming part of the seat.

In describing our invention by aid of the drawing above referred to we desire to point out that we intend said views as simply illustrative of an example whereby our invention may be applied in practice and we do not limit our claims to the precise arrangements and constructlon of parts 1nd1- cated. The following descrlption 1s therefore to be construed broadly as including substitute arrangements and construction which are the obvious equivalents of those shown.

The drawing shows a swing seat that can be made of any desired length and that embodies a back, a foldable seat frame and foldable arms.

The back comprises side rails 1 having the lower ends thereof enlarged to provide forward extensions 2. The side rails 1 are connected by transverse bars 3 and vertical slats t constituting a lattice or back rest that can be of any suitable design. shoulders 5 and mounted in these shoulders are screw eyes 6 to which suspension cables can be attached.

Pivotally mounted between the lower ends of the extensions 2 of the back rails by pins 7 or a transverse rod is a seat frame 8 having a slatted or solid support 9. The seat frame is capable of being swung into parallelism with the back, as shown by dot-ted lines in Fig. 3 and the rear side of the frame, adjacent to the ends thereof has sockets 10, the purpose of which will presently appear.

The forward extensions 2 of the seat back are provided with vertically alining screw eyes or eye bolts 11 extending into slots 12 provided therefor in the top and bottom bars 13 and 14: of arms 15. The arms 15 are pivotally held in engagement with the screw eyes 11 by pivot pins 16 that are placed in position prior to mounting arm rests 17 upon the arms 15, said pivot pins permitting of the arms being swung inwardly into parallelism with the folded seat frame, as shown in Fig. 4.

The arms 15 are provided with vertical tie rods 18 having eyes 19 at the upper ends thereof cooperating with the screw eyes 6 in suspending the swing seat from the ceiling of a porch or other support. The lower ends of the tie rods 18 are provided with brackets 20 and nuts 21. The brackets 20 have outer flanges 22 engaging the outer sides of the arms, as shown in Fig. 3 and these brackets support the forward edge of the seat frame. The brackets have resilient keepers 23 that engage the inner sides of the seat frame, when the same is in use, said keepers being capable of being sprung into the sockets 10 when the arms are folded against the folded seat frame, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. l.

From the foregoing it will be observed that We have devised a strong and durable structure and reserve the right to construct the back rails to accommodate a foldable seat and foldable arms upon both sides of the back, thereby providing a double swing seat.

What we claim is A foldable swing seat comprising a back, a seat frame pivotally connected at its rear therewith and capable of being swung to a position parallel with said back, said seatframe having its rear edge provided with a pair of sockets, arms pivotally connected at their rear to the back and capable of being folded to a position parallel with respect to the hack, brackets secured to the bottoms of said arms at their forward ends, said brackets projecting inwardly with respect to the inner sides of said arms and provided at their inner longitudinal edge with vertically disposed resilient keepers of a width less than the length of the brackets receiving the forward end of said seat frame when the latter is lowered thereby supporting said frame, said keepers engaging and maintaining said frame stationary upon the brackets,
