`EEN AND PENCIL HOLDER.
Patented sept. 9, 191s.`
Application 1ed l'une 2, 1913. Serial No. 771,215.
` To all whom, may concern.'
Be it known that I, ERNEST N. HUMPHREY, a citizen'of the United States, residing at New Britainy Hartford county, State of Connecticut, ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pen and Pencil Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;l
This inventionrelates to a particularly ,advantageous form of supporting and holding means for pencils, pens and similar articles of a type wherein a clip is rovided for attaching the holder `to the e ge of a pocket or similar supporting means.
Specifically, the invention provides a device of this character which may be advantageously formed of a single piece of sheet metal and which not only securely holds the` device in position, but securely holds and maintains the article supported thereby in.
its init-ial position in the holden A preferable embodiment is described detail in the following specicatiom taken-` in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating such a preferable embodiment, and `in which;
` Figure 1 is'a view in elevationy showing the device applied to a pocket edge and with a pencil carried thereby. Fig. 2 is a rear elevationof the attachment detached from the pocket. Fig. 3 is a similar view in front elevation. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the attachment. l l
Referring to the drawings by numerals,
l indicates a. pencil or analogous articleadapted to be supported bythe attachment, and 2` the edge of a pocket by which the attachment is supported.- The attachment itselfis preferably stamped from a single piece of sheet metal to provide a U-shaped supporting clip having oppositely disposed arms 3 and 4. Arm 3 of this clip, which, as illustrated, forms the outer of the two arms with reference to the pencil, is provided with a curved lower end 5 to facilitate the attachment of the clip to the. pocket. This same arm'is slotted to provide the elongated opening 6 therein. The opposite arm 4 is provided with a spring tongue 7 which may be struck from the material of said arm and which'is in alinement with the slot 6.
From. the lower extremity of arm 4'of the clip and at opposite edges thereof, spaced the same against the face of arm 4 of thek spring '-clip. These armsv 9 and 10 lare 4spaced laterally from the face of the arm v4 of :the spring clip, which face, at its lower end, recessed as at 8 to increase the resiliency of the arms and to provide clearance for the. pen or pencil atthat point when the upper end of the pencil is moved outwardly against the spring clamping action of t-he spanning bar 11... The arms 9 and 10 are spaced apart a sufcientdistance to allow the insertion therebetween of the supported pen or pencil. As the spanning bar 11 is offs'etoutwardly from the face of these arms, they will lie at opposite sides of the pen or-pencil and will guide the same therebetween when the-pencil is inserted, and will 'serve to maintain the pencil in its inserted ,position afterward.
The supporting U-shaped clip. may dispense with the spring tongue 7 and slot 6' l and engage'. the supporting portion of the clothing by the inherent.,- resiliency of its arms 3 and 4, but I prefer to use said tongue and slotinasmuch as the pressure of the 4spring tongue serves to' press the edge of the p ocket, for instance, within the slotted portion 6 and thereby aii'ords a more efficacious grip. 4
The entire device may be, andA preferably' is, formed from 'a single piece of sheet meta'. shaped by suit-able mechanism to provide tin. structure disclosed. The specific structure disclosedis. therefore, of particular advantage from the standpoint of manufacture as well as from the standpoint of utility.V The guiding action of the spring arms is also Very ,eiicacions in that it maintains the pen or pencil in a substantially vertical plane and against movement relative to the holder.
While I have herein describedl and illus-- trated a preferable embodiment of the -inV vention, it4 will, of course, be understood that the same is susceptible of variation'in parts withinthe spirit of the invention and y the scope of the appended claims.
- lVhat I claim, therefore, and desire to se? cure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described embodying' a sheet metal U-shaped clip arranged to engage a suitable support bet-Ween its arms, integral spaced spring arms eX- 'tending outwardly from the end of one of said clip arms and thence backwardly in a plane substantially parallel with said clip arm, said arm being recessed at its end and intermediate the junction therewith of said spring arms to provide a clearancespace, and said spring arms being united vat their ends by an integral offset spanning bar arranged to engage andyieldingly clamp a pencil against said clip arm, said spaced spring arms being arranged to guide the sides of a pencil therebetween.
2. A device of the character described, embodying a sheet metal U-shaped clip having one arm slotted and having an alined spring tongue extendingfrom its other arm and toward said slot, said clip being arranged to engage a suitable support between its arms, integral spaced spring arms eX- tendingoutwardly from the end of one of l said clip arms and thence backwardly in a plane substantially parallel with said. clip arm, said spring arms being united at their ends by an integral offset spanning bar arranged to engage and yieldingly clamp a pencil against said clip arm, said spaced spring arms being arranged to guide the sides of a pencil therebetween.
3. A device of the character described, embodying a sheet met-al U-shaped clip having one arm slotted and having an alined spring tongue struck from its other arm and eX- tending toward said slot, said clip being arranged to engage a suitable support between its arms, integral spaced spring arms extending'outwardly from the end of oneof said clip arms and thence backwardly in a plane substantially parallel with said clip arm, said arm being recessed at its end and intermediate the junction therewith of said spring arms to provide a clearance space, and said spring arms being united at their W.
