R. V. STONES.
FOUNTAIN PEN CLIP. APPLlc/xxon FILED Mmnzs. |911.

REGINALD VICTOR STONES, 0F ALTRINCHAM, ENGLAND.
FOUNTAIN-PEN CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.v
Patented Dec. 10, 1918.
Application file-d March 26, 1917. Serial No. 157,530.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, REGINALD VICTOR STONES, a citizen of England, residing at 10 High street, Altrincham, in the county of Cheshire, have invented an Improved Fountain-Pen Clip which holds the pen in the pocket with absolute security, of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a new or improved form of clip for securely holding a fountain pen, pencil or the like to the material of a waistcoat or like pocket and thereby to prevent accidental displacement and loss of the instrument. A further feature of my arrangement is that it does not in any way damage the material of the pocket when its gripping parts are being closed or opened.
y invention` will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which,
Figure l, is a front elevation of one form of my improved clip with the parts in gripping position,
Fig. 2, side elevation of same, Fig. 3, sectional side elevation of same, Fig. 4:, plan, Fig. 5, sectional plan on line A. B. of Fig. 3.
In accordance with my invention the metal Y body a f the clip is formed in one with the tubular portion o split at c. The body a is substantially U-shaped in side elevation and is strengthened by corrugating it throughout projecting Hanges c at the edges, such flanges also serving to keep in position laterally a flexible metal spring f of U-shape in side elevation as will be clearly seen from Fig. 3. The resiliency of the spring tends to keep it in position vertically but to insure its being kept in place in that direction, the tubular spring.
`inner end to pass into a slot y' and at the same time form shoulders 7c to bear against the outer face ofthe spring. The reduced portion of the arm i also assists in keeping the front part of the spring in position laterally. The lever is provided with extending pivots m adapted to be behind snugs 'It struck up from the body a.
The fountain pen or pencil is gripped in the tubular part I) as will be well understood. To securely hold the pen or pencil to the garment thelong arm it is turned upward from a horizontal position to a vertical position so that the short arm z' forces the outer arm of the spring f in contactwith the cloth and the latter is gripped between both arms of the spring so tightly that the pen or pencil is held firmly and cannot get away. Release is effected by reversing the operation. The grip' on the cloth is gentle but rm.
What I claim is:
A clip for pens and other. similar articles, comprising a sleeve adapted to grip the article, an inverted U-shaped arm or body portion provided with longitudinal corrugations, said arm being formed integral with the said sleeve and projecting from one end of it, and means for clamping a portion of a garment between the free end portion of the said arm and the adjacent side portion of the sleeve.
REGINALD VICTOR STONES.
