SPRING CLIP.
APPLICATION FILED IAN. 21. 1920.

' INVENTCI a W HALKE T UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM EALKET, OE HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS, 'ASSIG-NOR TO L. D. VAN VALKEN- BURG, OF HOLYOKE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SPRING-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 16, 1921.
Application filed January 21, 1920. Serial No. 353,117.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM HALKET, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spring clips for holding papers and small articles together and its leading object 1s to provide va simple device of this character constructed in twopieces one of which 1s provided with a spring for engaging the other, the two pieces or members being p1votally associated with each other so that the spring will exert tension against one of the members to hold terminal portlonspf both members toward each other, the device being so constructed that the connectlng ears which permit of pivotal movement of one member on the other cannot directly engage the surface of a desk or table or other article byreason of the fact that the terminal portion of said ears is prevented from direct engagement with the desk r table surface by reason of an offset portlon formed on the member engaged by said ears.
With the above and other objects in view this invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1n which:
Figure 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings 5 designates one of the lever members which provides a jaw 6 and a handle 7. The lever 5 is formed with trunnions 7 and 8 extending on opposite sides thereof into openings 9 formed in the supporting ears 9 provided on the lever 10. The lever 10 also provides a jaw 11 disposed in opposition to the jaw 6 and a handle 12 is disposed in opposition to the handle 7.
The member 5 is formed with a rearwardly extending spring tongue 13 preferably stamped therefrom and thus providing a rearwardly extending slot 13. The terminal portion 13 of said tongue has contactlng engagement with the inner face of the lever member 10 and exerts a tension against said lever member to hold the jaws 6 and 11 normally toward each other.
The lever member 5 is formed with a raised or corrugated portion providing a reinforcing rib 14 which substantially parallelsthe outline of the member and which 1s raised at its forward portion slightly above the terminal portion of the ears 9, so that said ears will not directly engage a table or desk surface. The rib is extended along the handle to reinforce the same against bending. The member 10 is formed with a similar rib 10' which need not be raised as the forward portion of the rib 14.
Having described my invention I claim:
A spring clip consisting of a pair of members, one of said members being provided nearer one end than the other with lateral ears provided with circular openings and the other member being pro-vided with lateral trunnions extending into the openings of the ears and providing a pivotal connection between the two members, the first member having a handle extending rearwardly from said ears and a second member having a handle extending rearwardly' from said trunnions, the first member having a relatively wide flat jaw extending forwardly from said ears and a second member having a relatively wide flat jaw extending forwardly from said trunnions, said second member having the body of its jaw offset to prevent the terminal portions of said ears from contacting with the flat surface on which the clip is associated, one of said members being provided with a spring tongue formed integral therewith and deflected inwardly to engage the other member to maintain said jaws in contacting relation, each of the handles being connected to its jaw by a diverging portion to permit of the assembly of the two members.
Signed by me at Holyoke, Mass.
WILLIAM HALKET.
