yltochester, in the county of-` Monroe and State of New York, have invented -a new and useful Improvement' in Pumps, which improvement is fully Vset 'forth in vthe fol lowing specification and shown in the ac'- companying drawings.
I The present invention relates t-o air pumps Aand more particularly tothattype in which a' plurality of communicating cylinders of different sizes is employed .for the purpose of effecting a greater v.compression of the air; and an Object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the method vof assembling its parts has been simplified so that the time required for suchy assembling is reduced to a minimum, thus reducingthe cost of manufacture of the pump. i

This tie piece may also serve to establish connection vbetween the upper ends vof two of the cylinders and to: this end the internalwalls of theopenings, -through which two of the cylinders pass, yare provided with annular grooves 17 and 18 con# nected by a port 19 and r-espectively-'cOm-- municating with ports 20 and 21 provided 1n the cylinders 2 and 3. - piston 27 will force the air from the cylinder 2 into the cylinder 3 at the upper end of the latter,vand past piston 28 by way of port 19, so that upon the downward movement of the pistons,'the piston 28 will force the air from the nipple 14. Of course, as the air passes from one cylinder to another it` 'becomes more highly compressed.
Freni the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a structure which is strong and durablein use and may be manufacturedvery economically. The labor of .assembling the parts 1s reduced to a minlmum, as it is not necessary to accurately locate thev cylinders in any definite positions.

In an air pump,the combination with base having three sockets, two of which communicate with each other and a discharge nipple communicating with the other socket through saidbase, of three cylinders of different' diameters having screw threaded engagement with the inner walls of the sockets, all of'said cylinders having ports near their upper ends, a tie piece having separate openings each receiving one of said cylinders, the walls of two; ofthe openings-being provided `with grooves which communicate with each other and` with1 the ports in the two cylin-V ders, the yportof thel other cylinder being' `open to theV atmosphere, cup shaped pistons operating in the cylinders, one of said pistons acting in a direction opposite to. the others, and a handle common to all of the pistons. In a pump, the combination with a base Y having sockets therein and centrally. a r ranged bosses projecting upwardly within vthe sockets, the walls of the socketsbeing provided with screw't-hreads near their outer` ends and grooves below thev threads, the Vlower wall of each groove being inclined downwardly and projectedinwardly beyond the screwthreads andvabovethe upper ends of the bosses, and the base having ports leading from the sockets above the bottoms of the latter but below the upper ends of the bosses, Vof cylinders engaging the Yscrew threads and havingtheir lowerends abutting the inclined walls, pistons operating in thecylinders, and common operating means for the pistons.- f y.
