HENRY TURNER, OF SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND.
AIR-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,018, dated May 26, 1903. Application filed October 24, 1902. Serial No. 128,621. (No model.)
To CbZZ whom it incl/y concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY TURNER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 81 Burcot road, city of Sheffield, county of York, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of compound air-pumps and iuflaters, being an improvement upon a former invention described in the British Patent No. 19,891, November 6, 1900. i p 7 The present invention consists chiefly in the novel combination and compact arrangement of the component parts by which the several tubes, pistons, and other working parts are inclosed within a single cylinder.
The principle of forcing the air from the larger cylinder into the smaller cylinder is not new.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of an air-pump as used for inflating purposes; Fig. 2, a plan of the under side of same; Fig. 3, sectional views of the working parts on an enlarged scale; Fig. 4, a section through the tubes, showing their relative proportions and positions; Fig. 5, two views of an improved cup-leather.
As in my former invention cited above during the upstroke the air within the larger cylinder is forced into the smaller cylinder, from which it is ejected during the downstroke.
In constructing the pump shown in the drawings I employ four lengths of tubing, all of different diameters, marked A B O D, those marked A and 0 being the cylinders, whileB and D are the piston-rodsor plungers.
The openingsI at the bottom of the cylinder A are the air-inlets, and O is the air-outlet. The tubes A and O are secured together by the part P concentrically at their lower ends and form the cylinders. The tubes B and D are also secured at their top ends concentrically and pass through a stufling box or gland E to the handle F to act as piston-rods.
The tube B is provided at its lower end with a flexible cup-leather piston G, which compresses air during its upward movement only,
during which movement the air contained in its cylinder is forced through one or more openings H into the annular space between the walls of B and O, passing over the open top edge into the cylinder 0 and so past the flexible piston J, carried by the piston-rod D. On the return stroke the outside air enters the ports I, forces its way past the flexible piston G, and fills cylinder A and other connected spaces, the piston J forcing the already-compressed air in cylinder 0 through the outlet 0, which may be fitted with a nonreturn valve, if desired.
Below the flexible piston G upon the piston-rod B is fixed a gland E fitting upon C to prevent the escape of air.
In both the glands E and E I use an improved hat-leather the construction of which is shown in Fig. 5, which gives an elevation in half-section and a full plan. It consists of a leather cone K, with a shallow groove round its periphery for holding a compression-ring, such as a coiled spring L. Its object is to compress the tubular part of the leather upon the rod or tube, this combination being found in practice to give a more satisfactory result. Such a hat-leather may be used with advanrage in other pumps and machines.
What I consider to be novel, and wish to claim by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A two-cylinderdouble-acting air-pump, comprising stationary outer and inner cylinders, pistons within said outer and inner cylinders and means for operating them in unison, substantially as described.
2. In combination, an outer and an inner cylinder, said cylinders being rigidly connected together, a tubular piston-rod carrying a piston located in the annular space between said cylinders, a second tubular piston within the inner cylinder and means for simultaneously operating said pistons, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
HENRY TURNER.
