MILTON BULKLEY, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
PACKlNG FOR AIR-COMPRESSOR OR OTHER TANDEM CYLINDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,859, dated July 17, 1900.
Application filed January 15, 1900. Serial No. 1,448. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, MILTON BULKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, county of Alameda, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing for Air-Compressor or other Tandem Cylinders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to air-compressors and other engines and machines in which cylinders are arranged tandem and have a common piston-rod.
My invention consists in a novel packing for the piston-rod, having for its object the dispensing with one stuffing-box, resulting in economy in manufacture, facility in manipulation, and efficiency in operation.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, the figure is a section showing my improved packing as applied to the cylinder of an aircompressor and that of its driving-engine set tandem.
A is the cylinder of an air-compressor, and B is a portion of the cylinder of its drivingengine. These are set tandem, and their pistons (unnecessary herein to show) are driven by the piston-rod O, which is common to both cylinders.
D isa sleeve, the head dof which is recessed into the inner wall of the air-cylinder head (6, said sleeve passing through the head and being held by a nut d.
E is a yoke between the two cylinders.
The piston-rod 0 plays through the sleeve D and passes into the engine-cylinder through the head I) of said cylinder. In this head is formed the seat 1) for the gland F, which is fitted upon the outer end of the sleeve D and has one end adapted to pass into the seat b, with space for packing between it and the base of the seat. The other end of the gland F, which may properly be termed a double gland, is adapted to lit into a recessed cap G, leaving space between it and the base of the cap-recess for packing. Bolts H inthe cap, double gland, and cylinder-head seat I) hold the parts together andtighten up both packings, the one on the piston rod and the'other on the sleeve. Sufficient space is left between the end of the sleeve and the inner end of the double gland to permit the latter to be withdrawn to clear its seat to place and renew the packing in said seat. By this arrangement a separatestnfiing-box in one of the cylinder-heads is dispensed with, which in any englue or machine where the cylinders are tandem results in economy of manufacture and facility in placing and renewing the packing, but which also in the case of an air-compressor carries with it the further advantage of leaving as much as possible of the air-compressorcylinder head clear and free for fittingthereto amaximum number of suction -valves, which would not be the case if a stuffing-box were used at said head. Furthermore, as in practice it is common to make both heads of the air-compressor cylinder from the same pattern, it is obvious that where a stuffingbox is used and takes up room on the head both heads will thus suffer detraction from their available space for suction-valves; but, on the contrary, with the construction here shown both heads will be free and clear for the greatest practicable number of said valves.
Having thus described myinvention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A packing for air-compressor and other tandem cylinders, having a common pistonrod, said packing consisting of a sleeve fitted upon said piston-rod, and secured in the head of one cylinder, a packing-seatin the head of the other cylinder, and through which the piston-rod passes into said cylinder, a packing-cap fitted upon the sleeve, a double gland fitted upon the end of the sleeve between the seatand cap, and adapted to enter both, and means for setting up the cap, to bind the double'gland between it and the seat, and compress their respective packings.
2. A packing foran air-compressor having the cylinderof its driving-engine tandem with its own cylinder, and a piston-rod common to both cylinders, said packing consisting of a sleeve fitted upon said piston-rod, and secured in the head of the air-compressor cylinder, a packing-seat in the head of the engine-cylinder, and through which the pistonrod passes into said cylinder, a packing-cap fitted upon the sleeve, a double gland fitted upon the free end of the sleeve between the seat and cap, and adapted to enter both, and means for setting up the cap, to bind the double gland between it and the seat, and compress their respective packings.
3. A packing for air-compressor and other tandem cylinders, having a common pistonrod, said packing consisting of a sleeve fitted upon said piston-rod, and secured in the head of one cylinder, a packing-seat in the head of the other cylinder, and through which the piston-rod passes into said cylinder, said packlug-seat terminating short of the free end of the sleeve, a packing-cap fitted upon the sleeve, a double gland fitted upon the end of the sleeve between the seat and cap, and adapted to enter both, and to be withdrawn from the former in the space between the seat and sleeve end, whereby packing may be placed in said seat, and means for setting up the cap, to bind the double gland between it and the seat, and compress their respective packings.
4. A packing for air-compressor and other tandem cylinders, having a common pistonrod, said packing-consisting of a sleeve fitted upon said piston-rod,and secured in the head of one cylinder, a packing-seat in the head of the other cylinder, and through which the piston-rod passes into said cylinder, a packing-cap fitted upon the sleeve, a double gland fitted upon the end of the sleeve between the seat and cap, and adapted to enter both, and bolts seated in the packing-seat and packingcap and passing through the intervening double gland for setting the cap up to the seat, to bind the double 7, gland between them, and
compress their respective packings.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
MILTON BULKLEY.
