WALTER r. ELLISON, or LYONS, KANSAS.
cOLT',-WEANER. I
To all whom it may concern Lyons, in the county of Rice and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inv Colt-Weaners,- of which the following is a specification, ref-' erence being had to the accompanying draw- This invention relates to new and useful improvements in colt or calf weaners and has for its object to provide a device of this character which may be quickly and readily applied to a halter and which will be most efi'ective in carrying out the objects for which the same is designed.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is formed of a flexible nose band to which is attached a pronged plate and a still further object resides in providing means on the nose band for attaching the same to the nose strap of a halter.
A still further object of the invention resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very etficient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrange- 1 .ment of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims. 7
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my device applied to a halter; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section therethrough. a
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a halter of the usual or any preferred type, the nose strap 2 and the cheek straps 3 of which are engaged with the usual metal squares or connecting members 4'. In many 'halters, rings are used-in place of squares which are shown in my drawing, but this is immaterial, as this part of the device forms no essential part of the invention.
My invention contemplates the provision of a weaning device particularly adapted for attachment to the nose strap of a halter,

and to this end, the nose band or the like '4 is provided, the samebeing formed of flexible material, preferably leather. xvThis band is of considerable width, tapering from its center toward'the' ends and bent to conforin to the curvature of an animalfsnose and riveted'or otherwise secured to the outer face of this band'4 is a plate 5, formed preferably of metal. Thisplate 5 is, of course, bent arcuately and retains, the flexible band 4 in an arcuate position. This *plate' 5- has the upper and lower edges thereof also spaced from the upper and lower edges of i the band 4 and tapers somewhat toward its ends, and the ends of said plate terminate some distance from the ends of theband 4 so that the latter are flexible so as to be readily applied to use. Struck up from the plate 5 throughout the face thereof, are the tongues 6. These tongues are substantially triangular in design and are bent to extend at substantial right angles to the face of the plate 4, thereby forming prongs there- This device, as stated above, is particularly adapted for use in connection with a halter and in order to provide means for the attachment thereof to a halter, I provide the flexible connections 7 which are detachably engaged with the band 4 at the central portion thereof adjacent its'upper edge and at its ends as clearly shown in the drawing. The flexible connection at the central portion of the band is adapted to be engaged with the central portion of the nose band 2 of the halter, while the flexible connections at the ends of said band 4 are adapted for engagement with the squares 4 of thehalter, it being understood that these latter flexible connections are equally well adapted for engagement wit-h any form of engaging means. When so applied to the halter and the. halter properly applied to the head of an animal, it will be seen that this band will, extend flatly over the nose of theanimal to a point immediately adjacent the mouth and as the prongs will extend outwardly therefrom, it is obvious that sucking thatvarious changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention. c
Having thus described this invention, What I claim is:-
1. A colt or'calf Weaner comprising a flexible nose band tapering from its center to- Ward its ends, a plate applied to the outer face thereof and bent arcuately'to retain the-band in rigid arcuate position, the ends of said plate terminating in advance of the ends of the band to permit flexibility at the latter points, said plate also tapering from its center to its ends and having the upper and lower edges thereof spaced from the upper and lower edges of the band, prongs formed on said plate, and means to attach said band to a halter.
' Copies of this patent may be obtained for 2. A colt 0r calf weaner comprising a fleX 'ible nose band, a plate secured to the outer WALTER P. ELLISON.
