J OHN- F. MILLER, OF MONON, INDIANA.
` CALF-WEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,494, dated December 17, 1889.
, Application filed March Z2, 1889. Serial No. 304,258. (No model.)
To all whom. it may concern.- ,y
Be it known that I, JOHN F. MILLER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Monon, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new anduseful Improvem ents in Calf-Weaners; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification,
This invention relates to calf-weaners.
The object of the invention is to construct a device for the purpose aforesaid that will be simple, cheap, and efficient, and which will be light and not inflict injury, which has so often proved fatal.
The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully inthe annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showingthe application of my invention; and Fig. 2, a perspective view,
parts being broken away, of the weaner.
The Weaner comprises a nose-apron A, of suitable flexible material, such as ducking or other strong and durable fabric. The nosestrap B is secured to the upper edge of the apron, and between it and the apron is inserted the metallic band C,which stiffens and gives shape to the nose-apron. The re-enforcing piece D, of leather or other stout material, secured to the apron near its upper end and midway of its edges, has openings d, which come opposite the nostrils of the animal, to permit of free respiration. The metal or leather binding E on the lower edge of the said nose-apron serves to prevent wear and weight the lower edge of the apron, so that the apron will fall across the mouth of the animal when the latter attempts to elevate its head. The lower corners of the apron are rounded and the -metal or leather binder eX- tends around the same and up on each side of the head, to prevent lateral displacement of the apron. The head-strap Fis secured to the upper end of the nose-apron, substantially as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1S e l. The combination, with the nose-apron having openings near its upper end, of the re-enforcing piece D, having corresponding openings, substantially as described.
2. The herein shown and described calfweaner, composed of the nose-apron curved at its lower corners and having a binder atsaid lower end, the head and nose straps, the
curved metal band placed between the nosestrap and the said apron, and the re-enforce 1), substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. y
JOHN F. MILLER. Vitness'es:
H. H. LirPrNoorr, SAM GRAVES.
