To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DANIEL WERTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Hose or Garment Supporter; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to garment supporters of the kind particularly intended for use in supporting hose and stockings, but is not restricted to such use as it may be used in any connection for which it is "adapted or appropriate.

The object of my invention is the provision of an improved article of this character, which is simple, strong. and durablein its construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and easy and rapid to engage with a garment, and which is adapted to firmly hold a garment engaged thereto without liabilty of tearing.

Further objects will be apparent from the following detailed description.

The invention is fully described in the' following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms within the scope of the appended claims, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 are front and side views of a supporter embodying the features of the invention, with the parts in open position for receiving a garment. Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views thereof, respectively, with the movable clamping member partly moved to garment clamping position, and Figs. 5 and 6 are similar views of a supporter clamped to a garment. Referring. to the drawings, 1 designates the body member of my supporter, and comprises what may be termed the fixed clamping member thereof. This member is preferably composed of wire formed into U- shape with its legs in looped engagement with or otherwise suitably attached to a rigid connecting part2, and has its legs preferably given a single coil adjacent to their upper ends, as at 3, to provide oppose .ing bearing openings for the ends of a lever member 4, as hereinafter described. 'The connecting part 2 for the upper leg ends of the body member 1 is preferably provided with a slot 5 to facilitate the attaching of a suspending stra ;6 thereto as indicated.

The lever member 4. of the supporter is also preferably formed substantially in: U- shape of wire and has each leg coiled in opposite relation, as at 7, to provide bearings for the inner end of the movable clamping tongue ormember 8, as hereinafter more fully described. The legs of the lever member 4, after forming the coils 7, extend therefrom preferably at v quite a decided angle to the body or looped end portion of the lever member, as best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, and have their terminals bent outward. in axial alinement to form trunnions for loosely fitting into the bearing loops 3 of the body member 1, as shown. The

movable clamping-tongue or member 8 is also preferably formed of wire which is centrally looped upon'itself with legs converging, as at 9, to form an enlarged outer end portion or head, and thence extending inwardly from the head and gradually tapering outwardly, as at 10, with their ends bent outward in axial relation and fitted into respective ones of the bearing openings formed by the coils 7 of the lever member.

It is'thus apparent that the tongue 8 is carried for free pivotal movements by the lever member t and is adapted to work through the outer looped end portion of the body or clamping member 1 when guided or pressed inward for such purpose and the lever tswu-ng downward from the elevated position shown in Figs. 1 and 2."

In the use of my improved supporter, the

When the tongue S is in such clamping position the looped end portion of the lever 4i projects downward over the outer side of the looped end of the member 1 in opposition to the-tongue 8 with its bearing coils interposed between the legs of the member 1 below or in advance of the lever fulcrum, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The drawing of the engaged goods through the looped end of the member 1 and down ward to the rear thereof by the tongue 8: servesto firmly clamp such cloth to the supporter, and such clamping engagement is augmcntedhy the engagement of the cloth over the shoulders 9 of the tongue 8. When the parts are in-article clamping relation, the angle of the lever 4 causes. the tongue bearing '2' to project below or to. the. rear of the lever pivot 3 so that an upward pull exerted by the. engaged article upon the tongue wouldtend to more firmly clamp the parts rather than to impart areleasing movement to the tongue. This is. quite important feature in the construction of thesupporter, as: otherwise an outward pull upon the en gaged article would tend to throw the tongue and. lover to article releasing position. To release the clamping engagement of the sup porter it is only necessary to swing the control lever e to its elevated position, the tongue being thereby drawn from its. goods holding position within the body loop- 1.

It is. evident that the connecting of the body, lever and tongue members in the manner shownand described enables such parts to be. easily and quickly assembled,and when assembled to provide a strong" and durable supporter, as the journal ends of the lever 4 spring outward into the body member bearings 3, the journal ends of the tongue 8 spring outward into the lever bearings 7 and the legs: of tongue 8 laterally abut atthe inner ends of the shoulders 9 to resist a lateral compression of the supporter and a separation of the parts. While the laterally abutting portions of the tongue 8 strengthen all of the parts against inward compressing stresses, the bar 2 prevents an outward separation of the parts- These features are of considerable value in the construction of a commercially practical article of this class. it is found in practice that this form of sup? .porter is capable of being easily and: quickly applied to-an article to be supported thereby, and will firmly hold such article against disengagement without liability of' tearing the same.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire. to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

1. Av garment supporter comprising a; U- shaped wire body member having its legs coiled to form axially registering pintle bearings in advance of the plane of said 'legs, means connecting the free ends of the legs without such bearings, a looped wire lever having the ends of its legs bent laterally to form pintles for fitting into the bear ings of the body member, the lever legs being coiled intermediate their ends to form axially registering pintle bearings which, a when the lever 1sm clamped pos1t1on,-'are the rear of its: lower end when the lever is in clamped posit-ion, substantially as described.

A garment supporter, comprising a U- shaped wire body member the legs of which are coiled to bearings between the ends thereof a bar connectin the free ends of the. legs. without said bearings, a U-shaped wire. lever havlng lts legs looped" between their ends to form opposing bearings: and

3(A garment supporter, comprising a U- shaped wire'body member having its legs coiled to provide opposing bearings, a U- shaped wire'lever member having the free ends of its legs bent laterally and journaled in said bearings, said lever being adapted to bear at its. looped end againstthe side of the looped end of the body member when the parts: are: in elampedposition, the legs of said lever being" provided between their ends: with bearings, and a looped wire tongue the free ends of the legs of which are bent laterally and journaled in the bearings of said lever, said tongue being adapted to havev its free end projected through and to. the rear of the looped end of the. body member in opposition tothe outerend of the lever when the parts are in clamped position, saidlever being angled to project the tongue bearings thereof provided with laterally projecting journals which are sprung outward into the body member bearings, and havingopposing bear- I ings provided on its legs, a looped tongue member having the free ends of its legs provided with laterally projecting journals and sprung outward into thelever bearings, and means connecting'the free ends of the legs of the body member for preventing an outward springing of such legs.

5. A garment supporter comprising a looped wire body member having its legs coiled to provide opposing bearings, a bar connecting the outer ends of said legs, a v
