FORREST I. OILAR, OF LA FAYETTE, INDIANA.
BED ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 14, 1912. Serial N 0. 731,401.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fonnns'r L. OILAR, a
citizen of the United States, residing at La Fayette, in the county of Tippecanoe, State of Indiana, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Bed Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to attachments for beds, and has for its object to produce a de- I i vice of this character which may be easily and quickly applied, and may be adjusted for application to beds of difi'erent sizes.
' A further object of the invention is to so construct the device that when applied the bed covering will be supported in such a manner as to not contact with the occupant of the bed, thus adapting the device for use in sick rooms or hospltals, and in cases wherein the covering coming in contact with the body adds discomfort.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
-In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device showing the same applied to a bed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device.
The device consists of a pair of slidably connected sections 1 and 2, said sections being formed from heavy wire and comprisa pair of horizontal arms 3, said arms belng arranged in spaced parallel relation and having their innefindsprovided with loops 4, the loops of each sectionslidably engaging the arms 3 of the other section.
A pair of arms 3 is provided with a plurality of depressions 3 which are engaged by the loops 4, thus preventing accidental slipping of the sections. The loops 4 are of such size as to freely slide upon their respective arms for adjustment.
The outer ends of the horizontal arms are directed downwardly in inclined directions, as at 5, and terminate in vertically disposed supporting legs 6, the lower ends of which terminate in loops 7 which slidably engage the supporting members 8. Each supporting member is formed intermediate its ends with integral resilient clothes clamping loops 9, and have their upper ends provided with loops 10 for slidably engaging the legs 6. Set screws 10 are carried by the sleeves 7 and areoperated to engage the members 8 to hold the device in a vertically adjusted posltion. The members 8 terminate at their Patented Sept. 9, 1.91 3.
lower ends in horizontal mattress engaging loops, said loops being semi-circular and extended inwardly and at right angles to the supporting members. 4
A plurality of'brace rods 12; are provided and have their ends welded or otherwise suitably secured to the arms 3, said brace rods being arranged in spaced relation and acting to prevent the arms from spreading, whereby said arms are rigidly 'braced throughout their length. p
In applying the device to a bed, the loops 11 are insertedbetween the usual springs and mattress, the clothes clamping loops 9 assuming a position to conveniently receive portions of the sides or falls of the bed clothing which is supported upon the arms, it being of course understood that the sections have been adjusted to fit the mattress.
If desired that portion of the members below the loops 9 may be formed of suflicient length so that they may rest upon the floor while the loops assume a position to con 'veniently clamp the bed clothes.
From this construction it will be seen that the device may be used with equal success for supporting a tray or books and the like, and that the device may be adjusted for application to beds of diiferent sizes. A baby basket may be supported upon the arms at night in any suitable manner if desired.
What is claimed is I 1. An attachment for beds comprising a pair of detachably connected sections carrying supporting members, resilient clothes clamping members above the ends of said members and adapted to receive and clamp the bed clothing.
2. An attachment for beds comprising a pair of slidable sections, the outer ends of which terminate in vertical legs, members slidably engaging said legs and terminating in a horizontal mattress engaging portion, resilient clothes engaging members spaced above said horizontal portion, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. An attachment for beds comprising a pair of slidable sections comprising spaced supporting members adjustably connected to the legs, said members terminating in a horizontal mattress engaging portion, resilient clothes engaging members spaced above said horizontal portion, as and for the purpose set -forth.
4. An attachment for beds comprising a pair of adjustably connected sections carrying supporting members, resilient clothes clamping members carried by said supporting members and adapted to receive and clamp the bed clothing.
5. A clothes clamping attachment for beds consisting of a pair of members each consisting of a pair of spaced arms, a connecting horizontally extending mattress en gaging member at the lower ends of said arms and a laterally extending clothes engaging member carried by each arm above the mattress engaging member, and connections between the first named two members.
6. A clothes clamping attachment for beds consisting of a pair of members each consisting of a pair of spaced arms, a connecting horizontally extending mattress en gaging member at the lower ends of said arms and a laterally extendin clothes engaging member carried .by eac arm above the mattress engaging member, and connections between the first named two members,
said connections being constructed and arranged for vertical adjustment.
7 A clothes clamping attachment for beds consisting of a pair of members each consisting of a pair of spaced arms, a connecting horizontally extending mattress en gaging member at the lower ends of said arms and a laterally extending clothes engaging member carried by each arm above the mattress engaging member, and connections being constructed and arranged for vertical and horizontal adjustment.
8. An attachment for beds comprising supporting members adapted to be engaged with a mattress at opposite sides thereof and horizontal members connected with the supporting members and extending therebetween, said horizontal members being adapted to receive a tray, said horizontal members being also constructed and arranged for adjustment to vary the distance between the supporting members.
9. A bed attachment, comprising mattress engaging members adapted for engagement with the opposite sides of a mattress, and vertically and horizontally adjustable tray supporting members connected with the mattress engaging members and extending therebetween.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
