To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY H. Woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holding Devices, of which the followingis, a specification. 1

This invention relates to a device adapted to be used at the bedside of a patient for holding paper bags or receptacles to receive soiled paper napkins. i

i Receptacles of this character have heretofore been attached by means of pins in an insecure manner to the bedding or mattress of a patients bed.

Such a manner of supporting a bag has, moreover, proved unsatisfactory by lack of any means for maintaining the same in a distended position so as to obviate the necessity ofa patient using more than one of his hands to deposit a napkin in the bag.

The object of the present invention is to I overcome the above and other inconven- 2 iences or causes of trouble by'the provision of simple and inexpensively constructed bag holding and supporting devices which are efficient in use.

The invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bagholder embodying my invention shown applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a portion of the bag holder with a bed rail in transverse section. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective view of a portion of the holder proper; and Fig. 4: is a similar view of the holder bed-attachment.

In said drawings, the reference numeral 5 represents an angle-bar side rail of a metal bedstead such as commonly used in sanatoriums and hospitals. This type of'bed rail is formed with horizontal and vertical flanges 6 and 7, respectively, and in proximity to one end of the bed said rail may be provided with a superimposed rack 8 for the prop member, not shown, of a back rest.

so In carrying out my invention, I employ a bed attachment, indicated generally by 9, comprising a plate which is bent or otherwise formed to provide a vertical body portion 10 adapted to fit against the rail flange as 7 and having at the top and bottom of the body laterally directed portions 11 and 12. The part 11 serves as the supporting member of the attachment by seating upon the rail flange 6 and to accommodate a back rack 8, where used, the part 11 is provided intermediate its length with anupwardly extending, looped portion 13. The rear end of the part 11 is formed to provide a downwardly directed flange element 14 adapted to hook over the rear edge of the rail flange- 6 and is desirably turned under the latter as indicated by 14 in Fig. 2. The part 12 of the attachment extends horizontally, or nearly so, below the bed rail and at its sides is formed to provide hook-shaped elements 15 to afford opposing recesses 16 as shown in Fig. 4.

Included in the invention is a bag'holder which is advantageously formed of a single piece of wire which is bent to provide at its midlength a horizontally disposed rectangular frame comprising a front element 17, side elements. 18 and complementary rear elements 19 which extend from the rear corners 20 to bends 21 and thence rearwardly as at 22, to'bends 23 wherefrom the wire parts extend downwardly to constitute a shank 24.

To render said. shank more rigid the wire parts thereof are desirably twisted or braided together as at 25. Below such twisted portion the strands are spread apart to provide vertically arranged branch elements 26 which terminate in rearwardly directed parallel arms 27 having outwardly directed extremities 28. The branch elements 26 at the lower portion of the shank are arranged to yieldingly retain the arms 27 at a greater distance apart than the width of the attachment part 12 in order that the resiliency of the branches will act to hold the arms within the recesses 16 of the respective hook elements 15.

The lengths of said arms between the branch elements 26 and the hooked extremities 28 thereof are equal to the lengths of the attachment parts 15 so that the hook extremities of the arms obviate the accidental with drawal of the holder from the attachment and will also serve to retain the branches 26 of the holder shank in juxtaposition with I are mouth foldedy'aslat 30. over theframe elementsoftheholder and, being-thus connected, the bag is secured preferably by means -.off spring metal-clips 31 ofsubstantially U shapes in cross section. In a device of the character described, the combination-with a support, of an .at- .tachment adaptedito en'gage over the top of support, a bag holdermade of a single piece of wire bent to'providea vertical shank elewardly extending arm elements at its lower end which are engageable in the socket of said attachment, said arm elements being bent to provide opposite laterally-projecting extremities for retaining the arms in their engagement with said attachment.
