FASTENING FOR HITCHING-STRAPS.
0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL RoMMEs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Crawford and State of Kansas, have invented an Improvement in Fastenings for Hitching- Straps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improvement in hitching-strap attachments whereby straps may be expeditiously secured around a post or to a ring without tying in the usual way.
The invention is embodied in a metal boxlike device having a longitudinal passage for a strap and constructed at one end with a hook for attachment of the strap and provided at the other end with a spring friction clamp adapted to engage the strap.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the practical use of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the strap fastening, the strap being shown by dotted lines. Figs. 3 and 4 are longitudinal sections of the device showing different positions of the spring clamp with reference to the strap. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the spring clamp.
The body 1 of the device is made preferably oblong and rectangular and is provided with a lengthwise passage through which a strap :0 is inserted. At one end and on one side of the body, a hook 2 is provided, and to this one end of the strap x is attached, the hook having two diverging arms, or shoulders, and the strap being provided with a series of lengthwise slots y adapted to receive the hook when the strap is turned at ri 'ht angles to the body 1. At the end of the body 1 opposite the hook, there is arranged a rectangular band-like device 3 which serves as a friction clamp for the strap cc that passes through it. This clamp is secured to the body 1 by means of a leaf or plate spring 4, which is curved slightly outward so as to hold the clamp drawn normally laterally, as indicated in Fig. 4. In other words, the tendency of the spring to draw the clamp 3 laterally causes its inner side to engage the strap :0 with a Specification of Letters Patent.

force proportionate to the strength of the spring.
In applying the strap to the device, it is inserted through the longitudinal passage of the body 1 and also through the hollow clamp 3 which in such case is pressed inward against the tension of the spring and into the position shown in Fig. 3; then upon releasing pressure which has been applied in the direction of the arrows in Fig. 3, the spring instantly retracts the clamp to its normal position indicated in Fig. 4.
As shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, one side of the body 1 is extended as indicated at 1; or, in other words, the body is provided with a flange 1 which serves as a stop for the strap clamp 3 when the same is pressed laterally, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 3. The flange 1 thus serves in addition as a guard or protector for the clamp.
In order to provide for riveting the end of the spring 4 to the body 1, the opposite side of the latter is provided with an open ing, as indicated at 5 in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, which opening provides for the introduction of an anvil or riveting tool, as will be readily understood.
In practical use, the strap being suitably attached to the bridle or halter of an animal, is passed around a post or through a ring to which it is desired to secure the animal, and the end which is provided with slots 3 is passed around the post or through the ring and then attached to the hook 2 in the manner already indicated. Then the device as a whole may be slid toward the post or ring so as to entirely take up the slack of the strap. The attachment is thus easily made and may be as easily released, while the security of the fastening is greater than is attained by tying in the usual way.
It will be understood that my invention is adapted tobe used on straps attached to halters and bridles and particularly on neck straps, that is to say, on straps one end of which is fastened detachably around the neck of an animal.
NVhat I claim is In a fastening for the purpose specified, the combination with a bodyhaving a lengthwise passage for a strap and pro away from the said flange which normally vldecl at one encl With a flange-like eXtenserves as a guard and protector, as clemen, of a fi'ict1on strap clamp comprising SOllbQCl.
