SNATCH-BLOCK.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, ANDREW UREN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snatch-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to snatch blocks, and has for a primary object to provide a corn struction of this character embodying an adjustable cheek section together with means for guarding the latter against engagement by the line.

A further object is to provide a guard device of this character which is adjusted to and from a position within the shell of the block, in a novel manner.

With the above and other objects in view to be referred to as my description progrosses, my invention resides in the novel features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and succinctly defined in my annexed claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout: Figure 1 is an end elevation of my invention, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation, the loop or adjustable cheek section being open, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary elevation with the guard swung to its open position.

Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates the frame comprising the cheek pieces 1, l, the latter of which is provided with a hinged upper section 2 in the form of a link or loop.

Reference numeral 3 indicates a cross-bar journaled in cheek piece 1' and provided on its opposite end portion with a laterally projecting arm or lip 41 adapted for en gagement in section 2 to lock the same in closed position, as is well understood.

Reference numeral 5 indicates a hook swiveled in cross-bar 3 and provided on its inner projecting end portion with a shoulder 5 securing a block 6 to cross-bar 3 for movement thereby.

Block 6 normally has snug fit between the upper edge of the lower section of cheek 1 and cheek piece 1, thereby forming a guard to prevent the line rising from the sheave 7 and fouling cheek section 2. Block or Specification of Letters Patent.

guard (3 is preferably of open form so that shoulder 5 can be arranged within the same. it is also tapered in an outward direction, thereby permitting of the ready insertion and removal of line with but a comparatively small adjustment of the guard, as i11- dicated in Fig. 3.

Sheave 7 is mounted on an axle 8, which latter is hollow and provided with apcrtures for the distribution of a lubricant fed from the chamber 9.

Chamber 9 comprises an inner externally threaded section 9 fixed to axle 8, and an outer section 9 threaded on section 9 and adapted to be rotated and thereby adjusted inwardly to force the grease in chamber 9 through axle 8.

Having thus described my invention what- ]I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, 1s:--

1. A snatch block comprising a shell having one of its cheek pieces provided with a hinged section, a hook pivot-ed on said shell, and a guard connected with said hook for movement therewith, said guard normally projecting into said shell. beyond the hinged cheek section thereof to prevent the line coming in contact with the latter.

2. it snatch block comprising a shell hav ing one of its cheek pieces provided with a hinged section, a hook pivoted on said shell, and a guard for preventing the line coming in contact with said hinged cheek section connected with said hook for movement therewith.

3. A. snatch block comprising a shell having one of its cheek pieces provided with. a hinged end section, a crossbar journaled in one of the cheek pieces of said shell and provided on its opposite end portion with means for locking the said hinged cheek section, a hook on said cross-bar, and a guard on said cross-bar for preventing the line coming in contact with said hinged cheek section when the latter is in closed position.

4. A snatch block comprising a shell having one of its cheek pieces provided with a hinged end section, a cross-bar journaled in one of the cheek pieces of said shell and provided on its opposite end portion with means for locking said hinged cheek section, and a block secured to said cross-bar and normally fitting between the cheek pieces of said shell inwardly of said hinged cheek section to prevent the line coming in contract With the latter.

5. A snatch block comprising a shell having one of its cheek pieces provided with a hinged outer section, a cross-bar having one end portion journaled in one of the cheek pieces of said shell and provided on its opposite end portion With means for holding said hinged cheek section closed a hollow guard member extending into said shell in- Wardly of the hinged cheek section thereof to prevent the line from coming in contact with the latter, and a hook sWiveled in said cross-bar and securing said guard member 15 to the latter.
