SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 693,081, dated February 11, 1902.
Application filed June 3, 1901. Serial No. 62,885. (No model.)

Be it known that I, HENRY G. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tugs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to tugs or shaft-supports, and has for its object to provide an improved support of this class of'more durable construction and which is designedto remedy other faults or defects found in those nowin general use.
\Vith these objects in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction and arran gement of the various parts, such as shown in the drawings and more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the drawings, where corresponding parts are denoted by the same letters of reference in all of the views, Figure 1 is a vertical side elevation of my improved tug. Fig. 2 is a vertical central cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section on line a; y of Fig. 2.
The tug comprises a pair of metal jaws Ct and b, openable upon a hinge or fulcrum c and secured around the wagon-shaft s by a lock-pin cl, which is normally held in engagement in registering holes in lugs e andfof the jaw parts a and b, respectively, by a spring g. Positioned internally of and at the bottom of the jaws is a roller h, mounted upona shaft or axle c to one of the jaws and adapted to form an antifriction bearing for the tug against a metallic wearing-piece 71; upon the under side of the shaft. Integral with the jaw a and projecting upwardly therefrom is strap Z, having therein openings m and and a buckle-tongue n for securing the harness saddle-strapp thereto. Secured to the same j awpart a are two perforated pendent ears 7" for the reception of a removable pin t, having a thread out upon one end thereof for screwing into a corresponding thread of one of the ears to provide means for detachably connecting the tug to an eye formed in the harness girthstrap u.
The lower end of jaw b is formed so as to engage the end of shaft or axle t, which will prevent the same from turning, and consequently becoming loosened and disengaged from its bearings; The jaw a has a casing a formed integral therewith, which incloses the roller h and has its sides a a serve as bearings for the end of this shaft or axle c'. To the under face of this casing the jaw 19 is hinged by means of pins 0.
It will be apparent from the foregoing brief description that by the employment of a rollerbearing all wearing is'efiectually prevented. By the use of the hinged jaws and lock the same may be clasped about or removed from a shaft in a quick manner, and by the harnessattachment devices the securing of ahorse is readily accomplished, and the practicability and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a tug or shaft-support a pair of jaws, one of said jaws having a strap formed integral therewith, a pair oflugs formed integral with said jaw, a casing formed integral with the other end of said jaw, a shaft in the sides of the casing, the other of said jaws being pivotally secured to the under side of said casing, said jaw inclosing one side of said casing and engaging the shaft j ournaled in said sides, the upper end of said jaw carrying a lug engaging between said first-named lugs carried by the other jaw, and a spring-pressed locking-pin operating through all of said lugs for securing the jaws, substantially as described.
