DEVICE FOR PRODUCING .AND MAINTAINING HYPEREMIA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. SIMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eheart, in the county of Orange, State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Producing and Maintaining I'Iyperemia; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the inven tie-n, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in surgical apparatuses, and particularly to devices for producing hyperemia.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a device by means of which hyperemia may be produced and maintained in the part or parts treated.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of my device, showing the same applied to the arm, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the device, Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line a e of Fig. 1, F ig. 5 is an elevation of a modification of the device, and Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the form shown in Fig. 5.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings 10 represents a cylindrical body, formed of any suitable material, but preferably of glass. At one end of the said body is formed an integral nipple 11, for attachment of a flexible tube 12, to which is adapted to be connected a vacuum producing pump not shown. A sleeve 14 is provided for slidable engagement on the other end of the cylindrical body, as will be more fully set forth later. This sleeve has a thickened portion 15, whose inside diameter is slightly greater than the outside diameter of the body 10. This thickened portion is formed at one end of the body, and the other end of the sleeve being comparatively thin, as indicated at 16, a shoulder 17 is formed within said sleeve. An elastic band 18 is adapted to be placed on the larger open end of the body 10, and applied to the part to be treated in a manner to be more Specification of Letters Patent.

A flexible hood 19 is provided with an elastic band 20 in one end for engagement with one end of the sleeve 14, and a similar band 21 in the opposite end for engagement around the part to be treated, one end being larger than the other, as shown.
In the treatment of various diseases of the body or extremities, it is often desirable to induce circulation of blood in the alfected part or parts. This is accomplished by the artificially producing hyperemia in the part. In the methods, and with the apparatuses now in use the hyperemia is maintained by the continuous and prolonged application of a vacuum producing device. Too long an application of such a device causes pain and injury to the part or parts. New, by means of my device, I produce and maintain the hyperemial condition without leaving the vacuum device on the part.
In the operation of my device, the part to be treated is passed through the hood 19, and into the cylindrical body 10, after first applying the elastic band 18 to the body of the cylinder, and the sleeve 14 thereo-ver. A vacuum pump is then attached to the opposite end of the cylinder and a vacuum produced in the cylinder. lVhen the proper degree of hyperemia has been produced, the sleeve 14 is drawn ofi the end of the cylinder in such manner that the band 18 is forced from the cylinder and onto the part being treated. When this has been done, the cylinder is removed, and the hood taken away. Thus a hyperemial condition is produced and maintained in the part without the necessity of leaving the part in cacao in the cylinder.
Referring particularly to the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the cylinder 10 is provided with a stop shoulder 10 against which the sleeve 1 1 abuts to limit its movement toward the pump end of the cylinder. The sleeve is formed with an inner annular groove 15 in which is disposed a washer 16, to make an air tight connection between the cylinder and the sleeve. The opposite end of the sleeve is formed with an outstanding peripheral flange 20 for engagement against the body in one of the applications of the device, as will be readily understood. The sleeve is also provided with a shoulder 17 for forcing off the elastic band 18, which is applied within the recess 19 on the end of the cylinder.
That is claimed is 1. In a device for producing and maintaining hyperemia, the combination with a vacuum producing means, of hyperemia maintaining means movably carried thereby, and slidable means carried by the vacuum producing means and engaging the hyperemia maintaining means whereby the maintaining means is capable of being shifted from the vacuum producing means onto the part being treated to maintain the hyperemic condition in the part after the removal of the vacuum producing means.
2. In a device for producing and maintaining hyperemia, the combination with a hollow cylindrical member, of an elastic band removably engaged on the cylindrical member, and a sleeve slidably mounted on the cylindrical member, said sleeve having an interiorly arranged shoulder for engagecessed, an elastic band disposed in said recess, a sleeve shdable on the cylinder and engaging the stop shoulder and over said band, an air tight packing carried by the sleeve and engaging the cylinder, and a shoulder on the sleeve for forcing the elastic band on to the part being treated.
