Description

G. S. THOMPSON.
DEVICE FOR TREATING SURGICAL WOUNDS.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 29.1919.
1,405,355. Patented Jan. 31, 1922.
1/ FIG. I. Z4
GEEIRBE STANLEY THDMF'EUN.
EIY HIE PATENT ATTORNEY.
8 is a sectional view of another form of the invention; and
Fig. 9 is a similar view of another Iorm wound. This cup is described in detail with reference to Figs. 5, 6, and 7 and from it a' discharge tube 16 leads to a receiving vessel or'bottle 17. It will, be seen the wound cavity 12' drains through pipe 13 into the cup 14: which by reason of the securing plaster15 firmly holding it makes a liquid tight joint on the body 11. The collected contents of the cup. flow through tube 16 into the bottle 17 from which the contents may be withdrawn as often as desired.
"01"- a body wound tor the purpose of relieving an abscess and n which the'boat 14 is replaced'by a longitudinalcollecting vessel.
' The cup 14,'for the preferred form, is shown in detail in Figs. 5, 6' and 7 and preferably is constructed of antiseptic metal, such asiron, silver, aluminum or the like, but maybe of glass, the shell being made; as light as possible and internally as smooth as possible with also a smooth facing. This cup is providedwith three orifices so as to make it universal or suitable for use inall positions. The orifice 22 is at the top and the orifice 23 at the end and both of these. are sho'wnas plugged while the orifice 245 at the side is provided with a rimmed thi'rnble whose verging rim 25 bears against the internal edge of the orifice'a nd ascrewed sleeve 27 on its external threaded end makes the joint tight while therubber tube 16 is arran'ged over the exposed end of the sleeve 27. Though the niost approved construction of this cup is adopted it may be made of various shapes and. have just such orifices as may be most suitable. s
In Fig. 2 there is shown a modified form of the invention illustrating the treatment The body 11 is incised through to the.ab s'cess cavity 12 by ineans' of a trocar-cannula to the cannula. 1 1; of which the troc'ar having'been withdrawn'isscrewed or fitted an adapter tube '18 say of metal on which is afi'ixed the tube 16 to receiving vessel or bottle 17 In this case the retained cannula 1 1 in the incision serves the dual purpose of tliedrainer pipe 13 and the cup let'oii 'Fig. 1 and insures the v same effect and efficiency in regard to the draining of the On the cavity 12. The cannula is held in place in any suitable manner but preferably a washer 32 of celluloid is fast fitted over it andthis washer is held to the body by means of tape or adhesive plaster 15.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 for the treatdent of a finger wherein for the collecting cup a rubber casing or stall 19 is substituted and this casing has an orifice midway of its length as shown in section in Fig. 8 for attachment thereto of tube 16 to bottle 17. T he mouth oi. this casing 19 should be contractible and preferably it is made with an expansible neck 19 so that'it will fit com fortably tightly on the'finger while in use as thedrainings 01 the wound get away as before described with reference to other figures Of' the drawing. I A 1 V In Fig. 4; is shown a modified form in connectionof the tube 16fwith the bottle 17 (in this case shown flask shape)'the orithe other for the penis havingits outlet 29 -at the closed end opposite its mouth. Each of these casings 19 has in its respectiveorifices (each of which is protected by a metal eyelet 30) the thimble 26 with verging rim 25 andsthe screw sleeve 27 for'making a tight joint and for affixing thereto the rubber tube 16 and such casing has also the contracting neck 19 for tightly affixing it on the subject. The casings may have near their mouth eyeletted' orifices '28 to facilitate attachment to the body and thisis regarded as recessing for the penis casing.
It is preferable that in the construction of the. various parts of the instruments or devices that the same be standardized, i. e;, made universal or interchangeable for "instance the tliimble, verging rim and screw sleeve o'f the'jointing should be made tofit the orifices of the cup and th'ereof all the casings.
"TVhat 1 claim a's'i'ny inventiony and-desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1.211 device for treating surgical and like wounds including a collecting cup adapted to be attached over the wound and provided with a plurality of orifices, an inlet tube supported ,within the cup and adapted to be. arranged within the wound, a flexible discharge tube leading from one of the orinected with the lower end of the discharge tube,'and plugs for removably closin'g'the uncovered orifices.
2. A device as claimed in claim 1-wherein fic'es into the cup, a receivingjvessel con-" means are employed for supporting the inlet tube and consists of a thread passing through the tube and adapted to exten across the Wound and means for fastening the thread and the cup in position against the body of the patient. 7 V
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 wherein an improved means is employed for engaging the cup and flexible tube together con- I sisting of an exteriorly threaded. and flanged nipple arranged through the cup with the flanged portion bearing against the interior of the cup and an'interiorly threaded sleeve connected with the discharge tube and removably engageable with the exte- 15 riorly threaded portion of the nipple.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE STANLEY THOMPSON.
