Specicaton'of Letters Patent. Patented Jil/ly 1 9, 191,0.
Application filedMarch 10, 1910. Serial N0. 548,385. l A f To all whom it 'may concern:
Be, it. known that l, llnxuv ll. (liswnmr, a citizen of the VUnited States. residing at .letl'ersonville .in the county o1 Fayette and State of (lhiofhave invented certain new aild useful Improvements in a MoutlnSpeeulum; and I do declare the following to be a full clear, and 'exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtaius to make and use the same.
This invention relates to in mouth speculuins for dental operations.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved mouth speculum by means of which the cheeksand tongue of the patient may be ettectually held out. oi the way and protected while drilling or operating on the teeth. y
.Another object is to provide a speeulmn dof this character having arranged therein mirrors whereby the -dental operations ai'e greatly facilitated.
I'Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
n the accompanying drawings, Figure -l improvements is a perspective view .of a inout-h speculum ings, l denotes constructed in accordance with the invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the blades ofthe speeulnm, showing a. modified form of the same.
Referring more particularly to the drawiny improved speculum which consists of two disks or blades 2, which may be of any suitable shape and which are here shown and are preferably of oval or elliptical form. -rlhese disks or blades 3 are connected together and spaced a' suitable distance apart by a connecting bar 3, which is secured to theouter edges of the blades, preferably midway between their ends, as shown.
To the inner edge of the blades, is secured a shank 4, the outer end of which is preferably threaded and which is disposed at' the proper angle with respect to the blades for engaging the latter with the cheek and tongue ot the patient for the purpose of holding these parts back from the teeth so that access Amay be had thereto for the pur pose of drilling or otherwise operating 'con'ibination andthereon. The blades 2 also serve to protect the tongue, cheeks and softA tissues of the mouth from injury ments which are being used on the teeth. With the threaded en of the shank, is engaged a handle 5 which may be of any suitable length and which is provided in its outer end with a threaded socket to receive the threaded shank ofl the tool.
.The instrument vis reversible and can be I claim is: A
1. In a mouth speculumfftt substantially U-shaped shank, a plurality of oppositely disposed spaced blades mounted the arms of said shank and a handlI detachably -connected to said shank at the "end of one arm thereof.
2. In a mouth speculum, a plurality of oppositely blades mounted over said formed on said blades for detachably securing mirrors therein and means carried by said shank whereby a handle may be eonnected therewith.
U shaped shank, a. disk having a transverse aperture therein`mounted on' one arm of said shank, aseeond disk having an aperture therein adapted to be secured to the end of the other arm of said isl1anlc,'and a handle detachably connectedto the opposite end of said shank.
