MONTGOMERY SLEETI-I, OF BELLEVUE BOROUGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO FORT PITT BEDDING COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
BED-SPRING-SUPPORTING FRAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONTGOMERY SLEETI-I, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Bellevue, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bed-Spring-Supporting Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to bed-spring-supporting frames.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple and efficient bedspring-supporting frame which can be hung from and used with metal or wooden bed-steads of varying sizes, will permit adjustability, when used with either, and will enable the parts for connecting with the bed-steads to be held rigidly when used on either style of such bedsteads.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved bed-spring-supporting frame, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing my invention applied to a frame formed in two sections and in an open position with the spring removed from one section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same in its closed up position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged crosssection, showing the manner of application to the rails of a bedstead. Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail perspective view of one of the frame supporting members.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the draw is illustrated in the drawing, 1 represents the upper frame, which is shown in two sections 2 and joined together by the hinges 3, connecting the middle bars 4 of the frame. The rectangular lower or spring supporting frame 5 is provided with the cross-bars 6, and between the frames fl and 5 are located the helical springs 7 which are connected Specification of Letters Patent.

at the lower ends to the frame 5 and cross bars 6, while their upper ends are connected to cross wires 8 carried by the frame 4.
Slidably and pivotally connected to the cross-bars 6 are the hangers or supporting members 9, for connecting the frame 5 to the side rails 10 of a bed, as shown in Fig. 3, and such members are formed of the straps or stirrups 11, which are slidably and pivotally mounted in slots 12 in the. crossbars 6 and end port-ions of the frame 5 by means of a flattened projection or extension 11 on each end of said stirrups. The slots 12 are enlarged at their outer ends in the form of a circular hole or opening 13, and the width of the projections 11 are substantially the same as such openings, while the thickness of such projections are substantially the same as said slots to form bearing surfaces for the projections in said openings and slots in moving along the same.
A washer 1 1 is interposed between the ends of the stirrups 11 and the bars 6 and end portions of the frame 5 and around the projections 11 on said stirrups, while centrally of each stirrup is fixed a hanger 15 by means of a rivet 16 and such hanger is provided with a hooked end 17 In Fig. 2 the hangers are shown as being swung around and extending inwardly toward the center of the frame 5, and when the hangers are in this position the spring is ready for packing, storing, or shipping or may be used in connection with a wooden bed by opening up the sections 2 and resting the cross-bars 6 and side rails 5 of the frame upon the wooden slats of the bed, as the hangers in such position will not interfere with the side rails of the bed.
When the device is to be used in connection with a metal bed, the hangers are swung outwardly to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 and their hooked ends 17 are engaged with the side rails 10 of the bed.
In case of any variance in the sizes of the beds as frequently happens with beds of different manufacturers, the hangers may be shifted or adjusted, which movement is permitted by the slots 12 in the cross-bars 6 and ends of the frame 5 through which the projections 11 on the stirrups 11 by which the hangers are supported extend, while the openings 13 at the ends of said slots will permit the turning of the hangers to either their outward or inward positions when the projections are within the same, and yet allow for the shifting or adjustment of the hangers for different sized beds, when the projections are in the slots.
It will be evident that my improved construction can be used in connection with a single bed-spring frame, and that various modifications and changes may be made in the construction of the device without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
It will thus be seen that the hangers will be positive in their action and will. not re quire the friction against the sides of the slats or cross-bars and end portions of the frame to hold them in position either in their use on a metal or wooden bed as in some constructions and that when the hangers are in engagement with the slots they are locked in position to prevent them from turning, while at the same time they are permitted to shift or adjust themselves for the slight variance in size of different manufacturers beds. The construction of the frame will also dispense with some parts generally employed in these devices and will be cheaper and simpler to manufacture, while at the same time there will be no parts subject to wear or adjustment and therefore less liable to get out of order.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination a bedspring-supporting frame provided with slots having en largements at the end of the same, stirrups independently movable 011 said frame and adapted to be slidably and pivotally mounted in said slots and enlargements, said slots preventing rotation and said enlargements providing for rotation of said stirrups, and hangers on said stirrups for engaging with a bed to support said frame.
2. In combination a bedspring-supporting frame provided with slots having enlargements at the end of the same, stirrups independently movable on said frame and having extensions thereon for slidably and pivotally mounting said stirrnps in said slots and enlargements, said slots preventing rotation and said enlargements providing for rotation of said stirrups, and hangers on said stirrups for engaging with a bed to support said frame.
3. In combination a becl-sp1'iii -si1pporting frame provided with slots having enlargements at the end of the same, stirrups independently movable on said frame and having flatextensions on the ends of the 'same for slidably and pivotally mounting said stirrups in said slots and enlargements, said slots preventing rotation and said enlargements providing for rotation of said stirrups, and hangers on said stirrups for engaging with a bed to support said frame.
4. In combination a bed-spring-supporting frame provided with slots having enlargements at the end of the same, means independently movable on said frame and adapted to be slidably and pivotallymounted in said slots and enlargements, said slots preventing rotation and said enlargements providing for rotation of said means, and hangers on said means for engaging with a bed to support said frame.
5. In combination a bed-spring-supporting frame provided with slots having enlargements at the end of the same, means independently movable on said frame and having extensions thereon for slidably and pivotally mounting said means in said slots and enlargements, said slots preventing rotation and said enlargements providing for rotation of said means, and hangers on said means for engaging with a bed to support said frame.
6. In combination a bed-spring-supporting frame provided with slots having on largements at the end of the same, means independently movable on said frame and having flat extensions on the ends of the same for slidably and pivotally mounting said means in said slots and enlargements, said slots preventing rotation and said enlargements providing for rotation of said means, and hangers on said means for e11- gaging with a bed to support said frame.
In testimony whereof, I the said Mona GOMERY Snnn'rn have hereunto set my hand.
MONTGOMERY SLEETH.
